Nursing homes : How dignity and values are defined and treated in practice and law (English)
Abstract [en]

The concept of dignity is a central notion in elderly care in Sweden. The aim of this essay is to show how “dignity” and “worth” is defined by authorities and in law - and how this is translated into practice. In Swedish law, there are specific guidelines for the elderly and there are also laws that are more general, and meant to include the elderly without specifically mentioning age, and this essay will examine what these say on the matter. Protecting and promoting the rights of elderly is an important part of ensuring fundamental human rights. Elderly people have the right to participation and a dignified life. According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, about twenty percent of Sweden's population are 65 years or older, yet their position in society is weak. Life in nursing homes are in many ways governed by routines and carers who have a natural power position over them. This position is not something they can easily challenge, because of the circumstances that surround them – by law, caregivers, relatives and their surroundings. There are a few common themes that also challenge the elders worth and dignity: consent, time, routines, staff shortage, authority and force, and this essay examines their relation to the mentioned key terms – and what this means for the elderly.
