The following thesis looks at the phenomena of arbitrary power and surveillance and how they manoeuvre both independently of one another but also simultaneously, to pose a threat to democracy, freedom and subsequently, human rights. The subtle, almost underhanded characteristics of both are explored to reveal the modus operandi of those who wish to reap the benefits of arbitrary power and surveillance. The result of such motives is the diminishing of democracy, a threat to freedom and the violation of human rights.
