A Venture into Dark Mariology2023Övrigt (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The Akathistos is a mysterious piece of poetry and probably the most important Marian song of the Byzantine realm. Apart from the fact that nobody knows who wrote it and when, it has a peculiar constitution: As opposed to much kontakion hymnography, it lacks a narrative development; instead it depends on flourishing imagery which slings itself out in intertwining scrolls. Thus it appears as a spatially oriented composition. At the same time, the Akathistos – despite later iconographic domestication of its otherwise wild and sprawling metaphorical growth – confronts us with perplexing images and unimaginable spaces.

Having discussed such tensions, I will venture into what I call the “dark mariology” of the hymn and explore how the salutations’ obscure imagery associates the Theotokos with landscapes and fields – where the Logos incarnates into more-than-human flesh – and downplays her human forms in ways that yield an earthier and more dispersed Marian imagination.

Songs about Women: [by] Romanos the Melodist2024Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

At a time when Christianity was becoming the dominant religion in the Byzantine Roman Empire, Romanos the Melodist (ca. 485–565) was a composer of songs for festivals and rituals in late antique Constantinople. Most of his songs include dramatic dialogues or monologues woven with imagery from ordinary life, and his name became inseparably tied to the kontakion, a genre of dramatic hymn. Later Byzantine religious poets enthusiastically praised his creative virtuosity and a legend claimed that Romanos’s inspiration came directly from the Virgin Mary herself. Songs about Women contains eighteen works related to the liturgical calendar that feature important female characters, many portrayed as models for Christian life. They appear as heroines and villains, saints and sinners, often as transgressive and bold. Romanos’s songs offer intriguing perspectives on gender ideals and women’s roles in the early Byzantine world. This edition presents a new translation of the Byzantine Greek texts into English.

Re-Reading the Sixth Order of Priesthood and exploring the role of women in the Syrian Orthodox Church in India.2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Examining the role of women in the ministry of the Syrian Orthodox Church is not a new endeavor; however, it remains a complex one. This paper aims to delve into the roles assigned to women in church ministry according to canon law, exploring the reasons behind the failure of their implementation, and identifying the opportunities available for women in church ministry today.

The creation narratives in the Book of Genesis 1:27 underscore the equality of both male and female, as they are created in the image of God. Biblical texts emphasize the invaluable role of women as supportive partners within the context of the church community (Romans:16:1-5). They are depicted as pillars of strength, offering their wisdom, compassion and dedication to nurturing the spiritual growth of others. This role as a helper (Genesis 2:20) is not one of subservience but rather of partnership and collaboration where both men and women work together harmoniously to fulfill the mission of the church and spread love and understanding.

Through this study, I have endeavored to elucidate the integral role of women in church ministry. The church must recognize and harness the considerable expertise that women possess across various fields of religious life. By doing so, their spiritual journey is enriched, enabling them to align more closely with the image of God and pursue their goals with greater specificity and purpose.

This exploration also discusses into the establishment of the office of deaconess and highlights the myriad opportunities available for women in the ministry of the Syrian Orthodox Church today. By embracing and empowering women within the church, we uphold the values of equality and inclusivity and enrich our community’s spiritual fabric.

Beyond Capitalist Dystopia: Reclaiming Freedom and Democracy in the Age of Global Crises2022 (uppl. 1)Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This provocative book interrogates the ideology of capitalism as the "default" narrative underpinning various mainstream ideologies in the contemporary world. The book explores the genesis, structure and functioning of this ideological narrative, provides its critical assessment and outlines a possible alternative, beyond the logic of capitalism and toward a truly free and democratic society.

The book takes a broad view of the major global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and persuasively argue that, in order to resolve any of the major global problems, from the ongoing ecological crisis to economic and geopolitical issues, we need to confront the capitalist system. To unpack the logic of contemporary capitalist ideology, and the way it structures our inter-personal and political relations, the book gives an analysis of the "end of ideology" narrative and offers a critical assessment of the ideas behind the widely used but fundamentally flawed concept of "Liberal democracy." The book revisits metaphysical foundations behind the ideology of capitalism, exposing their secular-religious dimension, and their immanent oppressiveness. Based on this deconstruction of the metaphysical foundations implicit in (Neo)Liberalism and capitalism, the book offers a way in which alternative metaphysical foundations can be constructed to allow for different socio-political and economic models that would be based on a radical affirmation of freedom and democracy, as well as human responsibility for the natural environment.

Iconography and Iconology2023Ingår i: Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion / [ed] John Barton, Oxford University Press, 2023Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Iconography and iconology are the ways of describing and interpreting images and their meaning. Although closely related, iconography and iconology can be understood as distinct disciplines. When clearly differentiated, iconography is understood as a method of identifying and describing the themes and motifs (“subject matter”) represented in an image, while iconology is understood as an interpretation of the meaning of images. Especially in the contemporary applications of the method, iconology is often understood as an interdisciplinary enterprise.

In its rudimentary form, iconography has been practiced since the earliest recorded attempts to describe images, conveying “what is depicted” in the medium of language. Already in antiquity is the application of the iconographic method understood as a way of relating depicted visual forms with textual sources, aimed at an identification of the subject matter in images. In the Renaissance, attempts at the systematization and codification of the most commonly used motifs in visual arts are found, resulting in manuals that offered a description of the motifs and an explanation of the meaning of particular symbols or entire scenes. The modern period (especially the 19th and 20th centuries) is the time when iconography was fully developed as a method, but this is also the time of a clearer differentiation (both conceptual and terminological) between iconography and iconology. A series of authors, primarily art historians, contributed to this differentiation and to the development of iconology as a discipline that deals with the meaning in and of images and artworks. Among the most prominent ones are Aby Warburg, Erwin Panofsky, and Ernst Gombrich. Iconology, understood as an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of visual phenomena, has successfully been applied in the interpretation of a variety of visual phenomena, from ancient, medieval, and Renaissance artworks to works of contemporary art and visual culture understood more broadly.

Orthodoxy and Anarchism: Contemporary Perspectives2024Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This book brings together essays by contemporary Orthodox theologians and scholars on Orthodox Christianity that analyze various aspects of the complex relationship between anarchism, both as a concept and as a political philosophy, and Orthodoxy. As many studies have already shown, the dominant theological approaches in Orthodox political theology have been characterized by the search for some kind of “symphonia,” where a “harmonious” and (mutually) beneficial cooperation between the Church and the State has been sought. Although one can see many alternative attempts in contemporary Orthodox political theology to move away from traditional, monarchical, and (autocratic) symphonic models, the fact remains that most of those approaches still tend to provide theological articulations that rationalize and ultimately defend the dominant ideological systems (such as those of the “nation state” or “liberal democracy” for instance). There has been, however, another, marginal and marginalized tradition in Orthodox Christian political theology which can be labelled as “anarchist.” The purpose of this volume is to gather contemporary voices in and on Orthodox theology that explore this tradition in the history of Orthodox Christianity, or that themselves employ an “anarchist” approach to the socio-political sphere (including the Church in its institutional functioning).

Schöpfung und Nichts: Orthodoxe Theologie und moderne Kunst im Dialog2023Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [de]

Orthodoxy and fundamentalism: contemporary perspectives2022Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This book reexamines the concepts of fundamentalism and religious Orthodoxy in the contemporary world. It brings together twelve essays by some of the leading scholars on Orthodox Christianity that explore the relationship between Orthodoxy and fundamentalist ideas and practices, both in countries and regions where Orthodox Christianity has been the dominant and traditional faith, and in the “New World,” where Orthodox Christian communities constitute a minority. The main issues that the contributors explore include fundamentalism as a religious and ideological phenomenon, the relationship between fundamentalism, traditionalism and modernity, fundamentalism in the contemporary Orthodox world, fundamentalist responses to the issues of modernization, pluralism, and democracy, Orthodox Christian responses to political liberalism and secularism, and Orthodox theology and the construction of the (fundamentalist) self.

Sanctity and Environment in Ethiopian Hagiography: The Case of Gedle Gebre Menfes Qiddus2023Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A muddy torrent of quasi-theological apocrypha, dicta, narratives, and sermons contributes to what the Russians euphemistically call the “special military operation” in Ukraine. It bursts forth from the quills and lips of senior Orthodox hierarchs, including the Russian patriarch himself, as well as smaller figures who together constitute an eco-system within and around the Moscow Patriarchate including priests, lay theologians and activists. This torrent has swollen and become potent enough to rotate the millstones of war.

    Abstract [en]

Secularisation, in the sense of radical differentiation between po-litical and ecclesial, is a key to understand the category of values. Thearticle outlines the modern theories about secularisation, places thecategories of values in the framework of these theories, and illustratesthrough the case study of the Russian Orthodox Church, how the ideaof values can be abused. When “traditional values” are weaponized, culture wars can evolve to real wars, like the one in Ukraine. Russia’scase of such an evolution cohered with the transformation of the So-viet militant secularism to the post-Soviet militant anti-secularism,on which the Russian political and ecclesial leaders have embarkedand which they have instrumentalized. Paradoxically, this is leadingto a self-imposed secularisation of the Russian Orthodox church andits alienation from the original Christian principles.

Націєтворення, нація, націоналізм та імперіалізм [Nation-building, nation, nationalism, and imperialism]2024Ingår i: Bogomyslie, ISSN 0135-5473, nr 1, s. 79-93Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The article examines the phenomenon of nationalism as such and its Eastern Christian variations. In particular, two main theories of nationalism are described: modern and pre-modern. There are also two stages of the development of nationalism: emancipatory and oppressive. The former is healthier than the latter. The article focuses on the Orthodox versions of nationalism that are consistent with the traditional structure of local churches. In the Orthodox world, national individuality in combination with church locality can be either ethnic or civilizational. The former strengthens a homogeneous national identity in the Balkan style. The latter is Orthodox neo-imperialism, which is incompatible with nation-building. Their incompatibility often leads to conflicts and even wars, as in the case of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Qur’ānic Intertextuality in Early Christian Arabic Bible Translations2023Ingår i: The Bible Translator, ISSN 2051-6770, Vol. 74, nr 3, s. 313-330Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper provides a number of cases where early Christian Arabic Bible translators resorted to qur’ānic-sounding language and (later) also a qur’ānic aesthetic in their production of biblical codices. The main purpose of the paper is to discuss various reasons as to why they went so far into the “realm of the other” when producing these translations. The answer to that question is most likely connected to the little-known function of these Bible translations, a topic also addressed in the paper. The adoption of qur’ānic language results in a comparatively high level of intertextuality and the use of codicological features associated with Mamluk Qur’āns also tend to blur religious borders. Thus, the paper also explores the possibility to view a portion of the Christian Arabic Bible endeavour as part of the broader process of “religious co-production.”

The Third Lung: New Trajectories in Syriac Studies: : Essays in Honor of Sebastian P. Brock2023Proceedings (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

No one mentions Syriac, – a dialect of the Aramaic language Jesus spoke –, without referring to Sebastian P. Brock, the Oxford scholar and teacher who has written and taught about everything Syriac, even reorienting the field as The Third Lung of early Christianity (along with Greek and Latin). In 2018, Syriac scholars world-wide gathered in Sigtuna, Sweden, to celebrate with Sebastian his accomplishments and share new directions. Through essays showing what Syriac studies have attained, where they are going, as well as some arenas and connections previously not imagined, flavors of the fruits of laboring in the field are offered.

Early Christian Arabic Colophons from the Palestinian Monasteries: A Comparative Analysis2023Ingår i: Literary Snippets: Colophons Across Space and Time / [ed] George Kiraz and Sabine Schmidtke, Piscataway: Gorgias Press LLC , 2023, s. 119-168Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The present study offers a comparative analysis of colophons written in Arabic by Christian scribes at the monasteries of Saint Chariton, Saint Sabas, and Saint Catherine in the ninth and tenth centuries CE. These monasteries have played a crucial role in the formation of the early Christian Arabic manuscript tradition. The colophons of these manu-scripts provide the most immediate access to the socio-cultural milieu of their producers. The present study is based on a selection of 20 colo-phons, which are explicitly connected to one of the three monasteries. Our main aim is to draft a typology of early Christian Arabic colophons as a means to investigate the various issues surrounding emergent Chris-tian Arabic scribality. Additionally, we will discuss paleographical fea-tures of the handwriting of the scribes who authored the colophons dis-cussed here. As we will show, these can be used to connect anonymous colophons and manuscripts without colophons, at least with some prob-ability, to the workshops of these monasteries. Overall, our aim is to highlight the microhistorical significance of early Christian Arabic colo-phons, which not only offer spatio-temporal, prosopographical, social, intellectual, and, to some extent, economic coordinates for the contex-tualisation of early Christian Arabic manuscript production, but also al-low us to catch a glimpse of early Christian Arabic scribal self-perception.

The consignation prayer in the ܪܫܡ ܟܣܐ (ršām kāsā): A study of liturgical development2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis tries to discuss the consignation prayer (formula) of the West Syrian PRES as seen in the Nomocanon chapter 4.8 in relation to manuscripts before and after the time period of the Nomocanon. Liturgical and theological significances of the consignation prayer is also explored through this thesis.

An inductive historical-critical method is applied for this study, with the help of the underlying theory that the Nomocanon of BarHebraeus has contributed to a liturgical centralisation within the West-Syrian tradition in relation to the consignation prayer of the PRES. The oldest manuscripts used in this study are dated to the 10th century and the recent ones to the 20th century, thus analysing and studying the liturgical development of the West-Syrian PRES’s consignation prayer.

Representation Grounds for the Muslim Brotherhood with Focus on Muslim Brotherhood in Syria2023Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between religion and politics is a controversial issue. It is one of the most difficult issues in many regions of the world. The social impact resulting from politicized religious movements is complicated, especially in countries where religion plays a pivotal role in formulating politics, such as in Syria and some other Middle Eastern countries.

One of the issues of great sensitivity in some societies, especially those with active religious movements and parties, is religious and/or political representation. Each religious group claims to have a profound social depth. These claims are supported by large segments of people. Rival groups, however, may have different opinions. Some politico-religious organizations claim that they are the only representatives of certain groups of people and thus, claim legitimacy on the ground of such representation. This applies to the Muslim Brothers in Syria (SMB), who claim representation of certain segments of the Syrian society, mainly the Sunni Muslims.  This thesis attempts to research the issue of the representation of the Muslim Brotherhood with the focus on Syria.
