The Shhimo of 1890 and 1934 - Uniformity or diversity?2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The ܫܚܝܡܐ Shhimo is the prayer book for normal weekdays of the Syrian Orthodox Church and it was officially printed for the first time in Dayro d-Kurkmo (Dayr Al-Zafaran) in 1890 with a printing press that Patriarch Ignatius Peter IV (+ 1894) had received in 1874 thanks to his visit to London and the Anglican Church. Prior to 1890 Shhimo was a diverse tradition expressed with different manuscripts in different monasteries showing a diverse use of different prayers and costumes. The second printing of Shhimo in 1913 and re-printing 1934, by the late Syrian Orthodox Patriarch Ephrem I Barsoum (+ 1957), was a reworked version of 1890 that included several important changes. This thesis will investigate what these changes were and what implications they carry for the understanding of Shhimo and for the Syrian Orthodox Church.

In this paper we will also start to investigate the transmission process of the Shhimo and study some of the manuscripts prior to 1890.

    Abstract [en]

In the wake of the current environmental crisis, scholars of late antique Christianity are beginning to study Christian attitudes towards the natural world. How did the early Christians relate to their environment? This article explores perceptions of trees, surveying the writings of Tertullian, Basil of Caesarea, and Sozomen the historian. What did an arboreal plant do, according to patristic authors? What kind of agency did they imagine trees to have? The investigation shows that members of the educated elite might think of trees as bodies with living, intelligent souls; they saw complex variety and gendered creatures with personal characteristics when they gazed at beings in bark. Certain arboreal species engaged in and were communicating through a sexual-life; many individuals made rational choices. Although trees are not free to move around, Christians assumed that boughs and branches could bend in devotion as trees expressed attention to divine presence.

I en död som hans: En komparativ studie över hur martyrers tolkningar av martyrskap och dess lidande förändrats2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The objectives of this study is to investigate how the church has changed over time, with focus on how modernity has influenced the church’s construction of its identity through martyrs’ texts, and to contribute to theory development through analysis. The study takes its theoretical starting point in Rowan Williams perspective on history as stories we tell to understand who we are. My main question is: how are changes in the church’s identity reflected in texts of martyrs from two historical periods?

This question is answered through comparative analysis of texts written by martyrs from both the early church and the twentieth century, focusing on how the martyrs interpret and describe their coming martyrdom and suffering. Ignatius of Antiochs letters together with the prison narrative from The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas is compared to texts by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and by four trappist monks from Algeria: the brothers Luc, Paul, Christophe and Christian.

Six motifs are identified as common in the martyrs’ texts regarding their interpretation of martyrdom and its suffering:

    1.    Suffering as freedom and liberation,

    2.    the transformative suffering,

    3.    suffering and martyrdom as argumentation,

    4.    suffering as communion with God,

    5.    the martyr’s suffering as the special path,

    6.    and martyrdom as combat.

Changes within these motifs are identified between the historical periods. Central differences between the texts involve a recurring shift from a transcendental to immanent interpretive framework, a movement from power to powerlessness and an increased focus on humanity and mankind in the modern era. The image of God has changed: from identification with the risen powerful Christ, the martyr rather identifies with the incarnated, suffering, serving, powerless and dying human Jesus in the modern era. The self-image of the martyrs has changed: the modern martyrs see themselves not becoming anything other than human, and instead becoming more human through her suffering and martyrdom. The political potential and hope have also changed: powerlessness is premiered, the martyr’s own guilt as human beings replaces the demonization of the other, and the change the martyrs hope for is in the immanent realm of humanity for the common well of all mankind in modern times.

These changes can only to some extent, but not fully, be explained and understood by Charles Taylors theory on modernity and suffering presented in his A Secular Age (2007) and Byung-Chul Hans theory on modernity and suffering as discussed in his Palliativsamhället (2021). The immanent frame, the process of disenchantment and the anthropocentric shift helps to understand some of the differences between the eras.

But both Taylor’s and Han’s basic thesis is that suffering is impossible to handle and by default meaningless and negative in the modern west, and that suffering in modernity has lost all its political and societal dimensions that previously could result in the fight for political change, and that there is no possibility to maintain a Christian belief in God whilst suffering. This is by this study proven to be incorrect. The modern martyrs, and the church in the modern era reflected through the texts of the martyrs, is influenced by but not synonymous with the modernity pictured by Taylor and Han. They are not non-modern, but neither do they repeat the same interpretations and theology as their precursors in the early church. Instead, we see in them the expression of a renewed Christian identity.

The modern martyrs in this study have, through theological creativity, recontextualized and reinterpreted their faith informed by the experience of modernity as pictured by Taylor and Han. The church has changed over time and it shows through the martyrs accounts and interpretations of their suffering and martyrdom. The renewed identity, both anthropocentric and theocentric, formed through creative theological recontextualization, has made it possible to maintain a Christian belief in God, a hope for a better world and a sense of meaning midst suffering, in the modern era. Taylor’s and Han’s theories about the secularization of the church’s identity and the modern west have not happened in practice.

Makt, Moderskap, Maskulinitet: En narrativ läsarorienterad analys av Perpetuas och Felicitas martyrium2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study is to investigate what the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas (Passio Sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis), read in english translation by Herbert Musurillo, seeks to persuade its reader about, and how. The study takes a theoretical starting point in professor Ross S. Kraemer’s critical perspective on ancient narratives about women as sources not necessarily communicating historical truths and actualities of real women in the ancient world, but are more likely to be narratives consciously constructed by male authors using female characters as rhetorical tools to discuss or explore differing subjects such as gender and identity. Through the method of narrative criticism and reader-response criticism this study answers the following research questions: how are women being described in the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas, and what function(s) do these descriptions of women have in the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas?

The study shows that women are described as either weak feminine mothers or, according to Greco-Roman antique conceptions of gender and sexuality, a masculine male, transformed from a former state of femininity and motherhood. The descriptions are closely tied to the bodies of the women and there is a clear hierarchy where the masculine martyr is ascribed a higher status with a point of view closely related to that of God’s. The descriptions of women have both ideological and theological functions as a way to discuss questions regarding power, motherhood and masculinity. The hierarchy between the characters functions as a rhetorical tool to exemplify what can stand in the way for christians to seek martyrdom, which in the perspective of the narrative is the way someone, through her body and masculine behaviour in the face of torture and sexual humiliation, can communicate the truth about God’s power to the assembled crowds of onlookers. Contrary to previous studies, this study shows that the text communicates ascetic tendencies towards its readers concerning motherhood and are not to be interpreted as a celebration of women or femininity.

The descriptions of women functions as a way to demonise the empire - but not the empire's perspective on gender. This is also a contrast to previous feminist studies of the text. The masculine male transformed from a former phase of femininity and motherhood is the exception that proves the rule about the perception of female weakness and lower status in power. The text appropriates the gender power order and the Greco-Roman ancient construction of gender and sexuality to ascribe the martyrs and God the true power. The rhetoric of female weakness being transformed in to masculine strength, self-restraint and body control through the works of God, functions to convince readers about the narratives ideological perspective and message about the martyrs being the true rulers. The motive is that the antagonist, the empire, the main masculine power in the world, is defeated and proven to be false through submissive feminisation.

Becoming Christian: On the Identification of Christ-Believers as Χριστιανοί2020Inngår i: Journal of Early Christian History, E-ISSN 2471-4054, nr 3, s. 64-82Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The origin of the designation χριστιανός is ambiguous. In this article, the use of this term is studied with special emphasis on how it reflects the selfunderstanding of the early Christians in the respective texts. In the late first and early second centuries, the term appears to have been something of a title of honour and an ideal which Christ-believers wished to attain. Toward the end of the second century, χριστιανός was somewhat diluted into referring to Christians as a group in general.

Peter's Legacy in Early Christianity: The Appropriation and Use of Peter's Authority in the First Three Centuries2021Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study combines traditional historical-critical methods with the sociological theories of Max Weber and Pierre Bourdieu in order to discuss how Peter’s authority is portrayed and used to create legitimacy in Christian texts from the first three centuries. The New Testament texts that mention Peter are discussed together with other early Christian writings that in one way or another relate to Peter as an authoritative figure. Peter emerges as a central figure in the diverse early Christian movement and is used to a high degree to discuss theological legitimacy. The main divide is between those who argue that legitimate theology should have a conservative point of departure based on traditional material handed down from the earthly Jesus and an apostolic succession based on interpersonal relations and those who argue in favour of a more progressive point of departure which places more emphasis on contemporary charismatic experiences. Both these perspectives are used by groups of various theological persuasion in order to argue their own position. Peter is sometimes used to legitimise a theological position with reference to Peter’s relationship to the earthly Jesus and sometimes to discredit traditions concerning the earthly Jesus by pointing out that Peter did not understand his true message. Peter is used as both positive and negative example for both these ways of creating legitimacy.

    Abstract [en]

The historical context of the Revelation of John is a much-debated issue. This article discusses the most popular theories concerning the dating and authorship of Revelation and finds them wanting. Rather than being a composition of an otherwise unknown prophet named John in the late first century, it is argued that Revelation should be regarded as one of many pseudonymous apocalypses that are composed in the early second century.

The Epistle of James as a reception of Paul: Rehabilitating an epistle of straw2020Inngår i: Scottish journal of theology, ISSN 0036-9306, E-ISSN 1475-3065, Vol. 73, nr 3, s. 216-224Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Epistle of James is one of the most overlooked texts in the New Testament. This is partially due to Luther’s judgement of the epistle as anti-Pauline. This article suggests that James should rather be seen as an early reception of Paul that brings new insight into the Pauline legacy of the late first century. James also helps us understand more about the theological issues of its day.

    Abstract [en]

Though officially atheist, the Soviet Union’s metaphysics, morals, and liturgics were in many ways a simulacrum of the Christianity it had attempted to abolish. In this light the liquidation of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church has many hallmarks of heretics being anathematized and forcibly converted to a new ‘orthodoxy’. Thus the Soviet Union, in common with Italian and German fascism of the same period, was a clear example of what the Hegelian political philosopher Moses Hess has called ‘political religion’, replete with cultic figures whose relics (e.g., Lenin) were venerated on certain feast days and whose writings became canonical texts of holy writ.

    Abstract [en]

The essay describes how leaven was perceived during Israelite times. In what ways it came to be incorporated into the theology of the Hebrew Bible. The inheritance the leaven carries with it is used in various ways in Nt. The essay describes Paul's and Jesus' use of leaven and gives a context for why this use was reasonable. The essay theorizes that the knowledge that the leaven came from Egypt meant that it could not be incorporated into the Israelite cult without exception. Egypt is in some respects the image of idolatry because several gods are worshipped. This means that the sourdough gets a legacy that needs to be managed. The bread leavened with sourdough is necessary during a time when there is a shortage of food at certain times. A bread leavened with sourdough provides more nutrition and makes it possible to store food for a longer period of time. The essay shows how the regulation in the Hebrew Bible lives on in Paul's letter in Nt. Jesus' references to the leaven are more general, where the leaven represents the spiritual in man. Leaven also takes on a different meaning in Nt in that it is attributed both positive and negative qualities. Leaven goes from being regulated in the Hebrew Bible to becoming in the NT a representative of the spiritual in man.

    Abstract [sv]

Revenge, Compensation, and Forgiveness in the Ancient World: A Comparative Study of Interpersonal Infringement and Moral Repair2024Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Handling moral infringement is complicated and this was as true in antiquity as it is today. Should one retaliate, demand compensation, be merciful, ignore the infringement, or forgive? Thomas Kazen and Rikard Roitto compare how Greeks, Romans, Jews, and Christians in antiquity navigated different ideas, practices, and rituals for moral repair. How did they think about morality and did this affect ideas about moral repair? What practices of moral repair did they use, within and beyond the court? In what different ways did they involve the gods in interpersonal conflicts through ritual? Insights from contemporary research on human behaviour guide the comparative work, since, as the authors argue, human moral behaviour and cognition is the result of both innate and cultural factors.

Smuts, skam, status: Perspektiv på samkönad sexualitet i Bibeln och antiken2018Bok (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

I Smuts, skam, status.

    Abstract [en]

Baptism in missions – Baptism Practice within Svenska Missionsförbundet 1878–1928

During the 19th century the evangelical revival movements were gaining land in the Lutheran Sweden. Methodism, Baptistic congregations and neo evangelical Lutherans were al spreading their doctrines in the country. They were all united by the conviction to awake the population for a personal belief in Jesus Christ. To reach the non-believers in other parts of the world also united their movements. But in the second half of the century the doctrinal differences between the movements, especially between the Baptists and the neo-Lutherans are splitting the revival into two different branches, the first is the Baptistic free church movement (Svenska Baptistsamfundet) and the second is the neo-Lutheran revival movement (Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen) that still operated within the Lutheran state church. At the year of 1878 a new mission society (Svenska Missionsförbundet) sees the light of day. And one of new movements leaders, Paul Petter Waldenström, strives for the new organisation to unite al the Swedish mission-friends for the greater cause despite their differences in view of doctrine. He doesn’t succeed in that manner but the new organisation will as a result of the doctrinal dilemma not include any specific view on baptism in its own principles of doctrine. The new congregations, formed within Svenska Missionsförbundet (SMF) will therefore accept al believers of Christ as members even if they are baptised as infants or as Baptists. In this manner this new mission organisation gains the role of the “third way”, right in the middle of the Baptistic and the neo-Lutheran organisations. What is even more unique and also the subject for this paper is how this new mission-movement could be conducting missions around the world without deciding what doctrine on baptism that it should embrace. What baptism practice did SMF use in its early missions? And what role did the dilemma on doctrine of baptism play when SMF was founded in 1878?

Nattvardssyn: En jämförelsestudie mellan systerkyrkorna: Svenska Missionskyrkan, Covenant Church i USA och Pactokyrkan i Ecuador2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
