Jona psalm: dess teologi och funktion i Jona bok2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kristenblivande: Fallstudium av sex växande församlingar i Equmeniakyrkan2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Generations, Credo, and Punishment in the book of Numbers: A Key to to Its Theology and  Composition in Persian Times2022Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The significance of generational change for understanding the book of Numbers is often taken for granted. It was Dennis Olson’s study of 1985 that put the spotlight on this theme. Of the several conclusions drawn by Olson, two are highlighted here: that Numbers portray two contrasting generations and promote the new over the old, and that this portrayal is consistent with the redactional structure or final form of Numbers. These two conclusions are taken as starting points in sketching the compositional provenance theologically of the book in Persian times in light of recent research.

Four contexts are inquired into: the origin of the so called Israelite credo in the Spy story (14:18) in light of form criticism and inscriptional evidence; the parallel text of the Golden calf-episode in Exod 32–34, which also features the credo and relates to covenantal theology; and the idea of generational punishment being refuted in Ezekiel 18 and replaced in the books of Chronicles.

Together these contexts show that Numbers has a timely message concerning the forgiveness and opportunities of the new generation standing on the edge of the promised land in the book, which may be read as a stand-in for the Yahweh-believing communities in Persian times.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the nature of the Primeval History and more specifically if there is a complication formulated here, that is later taken up or answered somehow in the rest of Genesis (or the Pentateuch). This is formulated as a question of if we can say that there is a plot in Genesis. Scholars such as Gerhard von Rad, David Clines, and Todd Patterson are reviewed. In dialogue with historical-critical research it is concluded that the relationship of the Primeval History to what follows is best understood in terms formulated by Georg Nicol as "rolling-plot," where a certain formulation of plot is not strictly followed to a denouement, but rather taken up and amended in a slightly different direction.

En feministisk studie av den svenska Evangelieboken 20022022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay has been to make a feminist study of the Church of Sweden lectionary 2002. I have been interested in two specific subject areas. The first is whether the biblical text have helped to highlight women´s experience, and if that is the case, in which way? The second area has been to investigate whether the texts have an oppressive or liberating tendency. In my study I have used Rosemary Radford Ruethers definition of experience which includes experience of the divine, experience of oneself and experience of the world, although they can be understood separately, they interact with each other. As for the second subject area I have used Elisabeth Shüssler Fiorenzas definitions of oppression and liberation. Oppression is defined based on the underlying or direct meaning that hinders or denies liberation. Liberation implies resistance and change by examining contradictions between the religious-cultural politics of “femininity” and the radical democratic politics of meaning and dignity. My study takes its approach from feminist theology and to it I connect two fields of method. One is feminist theological practices and the other is qualitative textual analysis. The analysis has been made from two biblical texts, one of the New Testament and one of the Old Testament. Both texts describe the biblical woman’s experiences in multiple ways which includes Radford Ruethers definition of experience. The text of the New Testament included a larger part of experience of oneself while the text from the Old Testament included as lager part of experience of “the world”. Both texts are liberating for women since they both meet Shüssler Fiorenzas definition of liberation. But the story of Rahab also has an oppressive tendency. Both women in each story contribute to their own liberation and in the story of Rahab also her family´s liberation. Another likeness in the texts is that both women have an experience of fear.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the degree to which pastors within the Uniting church of Sweden (Equmeniakyrkan) feel that they possess authority within the context of their ministries and in what way they find opportunities to influence people to green transition. The method used to study this is a combined study, comprising a survey and a couple of follow-up interviews.

The results of the study show that the majority of the pastors believe that it is important to work with issues related to green transition, but that the majority at the same time show doubts about being concrete and precise about these matters. The result could indicate an uncertainty regarding one's own authority to guide individuals to concrete lifestyle changes and ethical stances. The pastor can thus be understood as a “key person” in his context; a person entrusted with authority and "keys". The survey shows that the pastors prefer to use their keys to open, but seldom to close or “lock tight”, in the sense of stipulating what a person should or should not do.

Kyrka i digitala rum: Ett aktionsforskningsprojekt om församlingsliv online i Svenska kyrkan2022Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Asymmetry and Mutuality: Feminist Approaches to Receptive Ecumenism2020In: Studia Theologica: Nordic Journal of Theology, ISSN 0039-338X, Vol. 74, no 2, p. 197-216Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Receptive ecumenism is a new current in contemporary ecumenism. By focusing on unilateral learning and by dissociating itself from presuppositions of mutuality, receptive ecumenism inspires rethinking and provokes new thought in the field of ecumenical theology. This article pays special attention to the non-expectation of mutuality in receptive ecumenism and analyses its consequences with regard to asymmetrical relations. The analysis is carried out in consideration of other currents of contemporary ecumenism where mutuality is associated with the struggle for justice and equality. Guided by feminist philosophical and theological insights on negative and positive understandings of asymmetry, the article discusses the nature of receptive ecumenism in view of a wider ecumenical terrain. It explores the underlying understanding of asymmetry in receptive ecumenism. It moreover inquires into the receptive ecumenical approach to mutuality with a view to the roots of this new ecumenical current in spiritual ecumenism and interfaith engagement. Attending to the factors of agency, diversity, and listening, the article identifies challenges to the viability of receptive ecumenism. Simultaneously, it expounds the role of receptive ecumenism in revitalizing ecumenical theological reflection.

På väg mot en interkulturell mission: En postkolonial feministteologisk analys av Equmeniakyrkans internationella mission2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The statement and the title of the thesis "Towards an intercultural mission" is the starting point for the essay's purpose and examination. Interculturalism is an ideal in which equality and re-ciprocity are characterized by cross-cultural relationships, which is also an objective of international mission. For an intercultural mission, it is therefore necessary to examine which factors may hinder an intercultural approach, which, for this study, justifies searching for underlying unequal structures. The theoretical frame of reference for the analysis is postcolonial theory and feminist theology, which makes it possible to visualize such structures. The purpose of the thesis is therefore to analyze the intention of the international mission work in the Uniting Church in Sweden based on postcolonial feminist theology, and to propose criteria that need to be found for the mission work to be characterized by an intercultural approach. In order to achieve the purpose, it is necessary to answer the following general questions: 1. Is there an awareness of unequal power structures in the culture-crossing relationships in the intentional discourse on mission in the Uniting Church in Sweden? 2. How does interculturalism appear in the international mission in the Uniting Church in Sweden?And; 3. What criteria need to be found for the mission work to be characterized by an intercultural approach? With the help of qualitative content analysis of the Church's public text material, which constitutes the study object; six thematic areas have emerged; gender equality, woman's vulnerability, patriarchal structures, mission and worldview, postcolonial structures, and cooperation and reciprocity. The result has been analyzed on the basis of the concept of interculturality and a proposal for criteria for an intercultural approach has been prepared, among other things, with proposals for clarification of unequal power structures and a critical self-awareness about their own history and cultural values.

Existentiell hälsa i en organisations- och ledarskapskontext: En inventering av existentiell hälsa i en nutida svensk organisations- och ledarskapskontext2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Spiritual health has an impact on physical, mental and social health. Working life is one of the Swedish public health arenas. The aim of this essay was to conduct an inductive and exploratory study into how leaders, in large organizations, freely reason based on a extended concept of health and the concept of spiritual health in an organizational and leadership context. Spiritual health and health as a resource were expressed by several leaders to be synonymous with what the organization strives for and what good leadership is and aims for. But the concept expresses it in a new and valuable way. The leaders linked many of the results created through their organizational and leadership development to the eight aspects of spiritual health. They see matters of meaning as important and topical. There was a strong belief among the leaders that the degree of Employee Engagement is high in their organizations, that they create spiritual health through their work and that it positively affects the business profitability and competitiveness. The analysis gives the overall assessment that life and working life influence each other. It shows great potential from a public health perspective as well as a socio-economic and business perspective. The analysis also points in the direction of a possible future model for research as well as several initiatives and work areas. For the psychology of religion, as a research topic, an opportunity arises for new research models, connect to other research areas, and contribute to an expanded political analysis.

Tid och rum: En studie om unga vuxnas syn på kyrkorum som främjare av existentiell hälsa2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay has been to monitor the thoughts and feelings of young adults/adults about the physical church as a space for spiritual health. It has been done with the help of three pictures in A3 format depicting three spaces in different churches where the seven informants were asked to grade the potential for existential health in each space on a scale of 1-10 on eight questions. The eight questions were based on WHO:s eight aspects of spiritual health. They were also asked to rank the churches in order of most to least pleasant. The result was that the two pictures that depicted churches belonging to Svenska kyrkan were ranked high in all questions. Bromma kyrka was the church who five informants found most pleasant and two informants found Adolf Fredriks kyrka most pleasant. Kyrkan vid Brommaplan were always picked as the least pleasant. A reason that the results came out the way they did is that most of the informants had experience in churches like Bromma kyrka och Adolf Fredrik and not so much in churches like kyrkan vid Brommaplan. Many of the informants viewed themselves as cultural Christians and had connections to Svenska kyrkan at some point. That could be a reason behind their ability to read and understand the rooms connected to Svenska kyrkan. As a whole the essay made clear that the informants thought of the pictures of spaces as more good than bad in the spiritual health aspect.

"Mind the gap": En studie av tidigare Alpha-deltagares relation till tro och församling2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study examines how former Alpha course participants reason about faith and church today by comparing participants who chose to become members of a local Uniting Church in Sweden with those who chose not to become members, after the completion of the Alpha course. It is the intention that this study will add to the dialogue, and challenge the notion of, using the Alpha course as a method of evangelism in the local church setting.

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the Alpha course and the local congregation in Uniting Church of Sweden in a particular context. The aim of the study is to investigate former Alpha course participants' own perceptions of the Alpha course's significance for them. Qualitative interviews were used as a method to obtain empirical material for the study, based on the following research question: How do former Alpha participants reason about faith and the local congregation today?

The result of the study shows that there are three common themes that emerged when the former Alpha course participants reason about faith and church: community, faith and time. The clearest difference between participant who chose to become members of a local Uniting Church in Sweden with those who chose not to become members in a local church, is faith in Jesus.

Pentecostal Politics in a Secular World: The Life and Leadership of Lewi Pethrus2020Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this book, Halldorf analyzes the life and leadership of the Swedish Pentecostal leader Lewi Pethrus (1884–1974), a monumental figure in modern Scandinavian religious history, while focusing on the politics of the Swedish Pentecostal movement. In this, he engages the work of Max Weber and draws particularly on Luke Bretherton’s understanding of the concept politics as wider than merely party politics. Here, politics is determined by the understanding of the nature of the common life; the structures that sustain this common life; and the relational and communicative practices that enable a common life that includes friends, strangers, and enemies. Pentecostalism is often understood as an apolitical movement that turned to politics in the 1970s and then partnered with right-wing parties. If that account holds true for US Pentecostalism, it does not for the Swedish Pentecostal movement. Halldorf illustrates how Pethrus, the father of the movement, became politically involved as early as the 1940s and started a political party in 1964. Unlike his later American counterparts, though Pethrus was culturally conservative, he favored a progressive economic politics. The strength and vitality of Swedish Pentecostalism challenges the image of Sweden as the world’s most secular country.
