Det cyniska tillståndet2019In: Respons : recensionstidskrift för humaniora & samhällsvetenskap, ISSN 2001-2292, no 1, p. 69-70Article, book review (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The concept "liberty" and it's implications has been critizised and analysed a lot in our contemporary time. In this article there are several philosophical and theological arguments presented about why a certain understanding of liberty has to be defended, particularly for women. Some of the first generation of feminists is interpreted in relation to contemporary conservative and Christian ideologies, here represented by Patrick J. Deneen. The article starts with an abstract perspective and ends with an implemented and experienced part of (men's) ways of womens restricted acessability to liberty in practice.

    Abstract [sv]

Pär Lagerkvist: Den kämpande humanisten2021Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this article, I am not addressing populism and freedom of expression per se, i.e. as two issues that I closely focus upon. Rather the perspectives are intertwined in the overall discussions and examples. Surveillance technologies can be used to stimulate populism and limit freedom of expression, as well as they can contribute to the opposite. The outcome does not only depend on the technology and its capacities, but on the persons, citizens, states, religious groups, and companies who use it. After centuries of technological innovations alongside industrialisation, the concept of surveillance has been associated with a Big Brother society, i.e. asymmetrical surveillance by the state or employer to surveil citizens or employees with different tools, visible or invisible. The aims of surveillance are a multitude: protection, security, efficiency, steering of behaviour and opinions, prevention of unwanted actions, et cetera. After the 9/11 terror attack in New York and Washington in 2001, the idea and implementation of surveillance technology has increased unimaginably, in parallel with a political view of the ‘war against terror’, and in parallel with possibilities for advanced technology that has become an essential part of how we, as humans, understand our life as individuals and as communities. One consequence of the paradigm is a certain gaze upon religious communities, where some become more visible than others.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In April 1919, the publication of the first part of the edited collection Det andliga nutidsläget och kyrkan ("The Contemporary Spiritual Condition and the Church") caused an intense debate within the Church of Sweden and in the daily press. The editors of the book were driven by ideals of open and honest dialogue about religious and ethical reformation in a time of deep spiritual distress and invited contributions from academia and lay people as well as clergy. Some of the contributions have been analyzed in previous research, as examples of contemporary theological debates. This article presents an analysis of the contributions of the books and of the most salient themes in the debate, covering 192 newspaper articles between April 1919 and May 1920. The analysis contributes to previous research by the additional new material concerning how theological issues were connected to contemporary political and cultural debate. This concerns the implications of modernization in contemporary Sweden, such as individualization, social justice, and secularization. Furthermore, the debate in the newspapers, previously not thoroughly researched, highlights how the book became a locus for issues such as participation of the laity in theological debate, and the role of the Church as a public authority in a secular, modernized society. These themes present fruitful openings for further research on the role of Christian actors in new forms of public debate shaping modernity in Sweden.

John Hedlund och den moderna staten: Ett komparativt studie av John Hedlund och Billy Grahams förkunnelse av kristendomen i det moderna samhället.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nya perspektiv på medieekologi: En studie av hur ekoreligiöst inspirerad epistemologi kan fördjupa journalistisk etik2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis addresses the objective of formulating a moral-philosophically credible media ethics by encompassing two main dimensions: the examination of existing media-ethical models and the integration of sustainable arguments through utilizing eco-religious epistemology to overcome identified challenges. By incorporating eco-critical perspectives within the Media ecology tradition, which studies media as environments, the thesis proposes a creative intersection between established media theories and a theological tradition that tackles profound questions about humanity's place in the world.

The initial section of the thesis analyzes moral-philosophical concepts within the media ethics frameworks proposed by three ethicists; Susanne Wigorts Yngvesson; Clifford G. Christians and Sandra L. Borden. While all three endorse universal values, they offer distinct frameworks for both understanding the ontology of universals and how these are contextualized in the journalistic community. Christians' moral epistemological theories, particularly regarding the ethics of being and Proto-norms have generated significant controversy and scholarly debate on the necessity and intellectual credibility of defending universal values in media ethics. Critical perspectives from this discourse are presented and evaluated as a complement to the analysis of Christians' media-ethical model.

In exploring sustainable moral-philosophical arguments, the thesis suggests that moral claims can exhibit both universal and contextual characteristics. It suggests that a media-ethical model should integrate universal values with a communitarian perspective on journalists'moral responsibility. However, understanding the interplay between the contextual and universal dimensions of ethical values requires engaging in critical moral-philosophical theory. In addition, critical perspectives on technology and ideas of space and time need to be addressed in new ways. Thus, eco-religious epistemology, as advocated by ethicist and theologian Whitney Bauman, is proposed as a creative means to understand moral-philosophical questions regarding space/time, contextualism/universalism, and technology within media ethics.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore the understanding about teaching in the Church of Sweden through analysis of the letter of the Bishops and interviews with a teacher of the community and a priest. The study also covers which theology that comes forward in the letter of the Bishops and in everyday life for the teacher of the community and the priest.

The study shows the relationship between learning and teaching as well as which theology that comes forward in that mission. A difference occurs between the terms learning and teaching that is not shared by everyone. It is shown that everyone’s own experience and beliefs is a crucial part of the teaching process in order to accomplish learning. The letter of the Bishops wants to connect teaching and learning while the informers says there is a difference. The mutual understanding is that we learn together, and that faith also is practice.

The teaching going on is constantly changing in the meeting with other persons, artefacts and the context. Peoples lives and the church’s traditions are in constant motion. By being aware of the authority perspective and by working with trust it will be a great lesson and learning takes place.

The theology that is created takes place in the meeting that occurs between human lifes and the tradition. There is no text or tradition that individually contains theology. The theology is created in the meeting with people. The meeting requires both people and text, neither can bring out theology on its own.

FRÅN EN ”VANLIG” PINGSTFÖRSAMLING TILL SEKT: En kvalitativ textanalys av Filadelfiaförsamlingen i Knutby2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppmaningen till kvinnans underordning i Nya Testamentet: Hur skall man tolka verbet Υποτάσσω i de nytestamentliga hustavlorna?2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine and interpret the usage and meaning of the greek word úποτασσω in the literary units in the New Testament called household codes (from the German word Haustafel included in Martin Luther´s Luthers Small Catechism). The verb úποτασσω is in the NRSV translated to be subject (Eph 5:22, Col 3:18) or accept the authority (1 Pet 3:1) and is used in the household codes as an exhortation to subordination for women. My examination and interpretation has been conducted through exegetical and redaction-critical analysis where I also have tried to cross-examine the christian writings on the topic with related texts on conceptions of gender in antiquity. I have studied the texts through the critical lens of feminist hermeneutics and from a feminist theological perspective. The aim of the study is to understand and interpret the texts from a historical-critical point of view, but my work also has a feminist-liberationist premise that hopes to find ways to constructively interpret texts that seem to diminish the full humanity of women and promote rigid culture-bound definitions of "male" and "female".

A Space of Uncertainty: The Relevance of Canon law in the Aftermath of the Scholastic School2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ancient canons are regarded as a collection of texts with almost the same status as the biblical text in the Easter Orthodox Church. The corpus has therefore a firm position in the identity of this church-tradition and is recognized as how faith, expressed in the gospels should be lived in ecclesial practice. How the ancient canons should be applied or used in contemporary ecclesial practice has been challenged in modernity. This thesis addresses how some scholars have faced this challenge answering how the canons could be relevant to contemporary ecclesial practice. More precise, it evaluates some answers to the question of relevance after (what we could regard as the first answer in modernity) the Scholastic school. The Scholastic school is approaching the canons more or less as formalist law. This has stirred justified reactions by a stream of scholars in the field. In the present study three such reactions is considered in the works of John H Erickson, Andrey Shishkov and David Wagschal. The basic argument of the thesis is, to better answer question of relevance, a new paradigm needs to be introduced, distinguishing between social identity and discursive practice. This means to accept “a space of uncertainty” letting go of the ambition to apply the ancient canons and instead give space to contemporary life situations to be informed by them. The tension between the past and the present is managed by an understanding of canon law as a substantive justice system in which the ancient canons belongs a realm of identity, and canon law as an outcome of discursive practice. In the end we could suggest that “the space of uncertainty” needs to be managed by an institution.

    Abstract [en]

Begging has engaged many people in Sweden in recent years and the debate has been intense, not least in media. When relatively wealthy people in the welfare state Sweden meet beggars, ethical issues arise. Poverty comes close and becomes more apparent. This paper tries to provide guidance on how each person as an individual could approach various ethical issues that begging gives rise to. The starting point is the potential donor's and not the ethical issues that the beggar wrestles with. The essence of the essay is whether to give money to beggars or not and whether the begging should be banned or not. To highlight the issues, a number of articles have been analyzed that can be considered representative of the debate in Sweden. There are opinion makers in Sweden who argue for a begging bid and who consider that they should not give money to beggars and there are those who believe that a ban is unreasonable and emphasizes the begging as a symptom of a poverty problem that is not solved by prohibition legislation. The different arguments of these opinion makers are compared and analyzed based on a theological perspective where texts from two theologians, one philosopher and a narrative text from the gospels form the starting point. The theologians / philosophers whose ethical approach the essay presents are chosen based on the fact that their thinking is close and has a strong bearing on the essay's question. In his research, Peter Singer has raised poverty alleviation as his main theme, which concerns the issue about begging whose reason is just poverty. He is not a theologian but, in my opinion, enriches the theological perspective. K E Lögstrup is a theologian and, through his ethical theory of the absolute requirement, he can provide an interesting theological perspective on the issue of begging. I will also use narrative text from the Gospel of Luke to highlight the begging issue. Luke's gospel is the book of the New Testament, which most frequently addresses the issue of poverty and the obligations of the rich. Finally, Gustavo Gutiérrez will be treated as representative of liberation theology. The begging issue is much about the power perspective and there the liberation theology has been central in showing that the way we describe reality always assumes a specific context that contains a variety of values that are often assumed to be universal. Simply an analysis of the power perspective needs to be done to make an essay about begging relevant and Gutierrez has a lot to contribute. In this essay I have argued that you do not have a duty to give to all beggars. It is reasonable to make an assessment where the gift is most useful. There may be other purposes where poverty is more acute or apparent and that better needs my gift. It is also reasonable to make an assessment if the beggar is used for criminal activities such as trafficking or prostitution. There are no simple rules for how this should be done, but I mean that it is unethical to give to beggars completely arbitrarily before creating a relationship in order to make a assessment of the individual beggar's situation. That relationship can be created with a few who may be begging in one's neighborhood. At the same time, there is the absolute requirement to take care of our fellow man, who Lögstrup has developed. Over our principles rests an untold, silent requirement that we can not bargain with. The requirement is radical but can not be converted into a universal rule. It might be about giving or not giving money or doing something radically different or not doing anything at all. Every meeting with a beggar is a unique situation that must be judged by the individual at the moment. The requirement calls for listening to God's voice aimed at love and care about the person I meet.
