Öppna vyer - lång sikt: Festskrift till Owe Kennerberg2021Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Barns teologiska språk: Barns förståelse av försoning i kritisk relation till Miroslav Volf2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I study how children construct their theological language in relation to the topic of reconciliation. The children's voices are put in critical dialog with the Croatian theologian Miroslav Volf’s notion of reconciliation in relation to embrace. The children’s perception of reconciliation develop and expand the theological concept of reconciliation. Seemingly, children's theological language describe reconciliation as an act that transcends time and space. Children construct their theological language through a materiality based on their own corporeal experiences of conflict and reconciliation.

Var redo! – Alltid redo!: En kvalitativ studie om hur Equmeniaföreningar bedriver scouting på kristen grund utifrån andakterna2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bibliska motiv i Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: En intertextuell undersökning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate students' self-rated health in relation to existential aspects. With a salutogenic approach, the study builds on theories of existential health, attachment-theory, object relation theory and alexithymia.

The study examines how the health promotion Existential health conversations affected the students self-rated health, school as a supporting arena as well as the self-rated ability of the youth to identify and verbalize existential feelings. The focus interviews have also been analysed using the World Health Organization [WHO] instrument for measuring health-related quality of life [HRQL] related to spiritual, religious and personal beliefs [SRPB]. To be able to identify the young people's self-rated ability to identify and verbalise existential feelings, the study has chosen to operationalise the theory of alexithymia, primarily inspired by the "Toronto Alexithymia Scale" [TAS20].

The study is a mixed-methods study based on 94 questionnaires and 6 focus interviews with the students and school health team who participated in Existential health conversations. The material for the self-rated health questionnaire is presented comparatively and the focus interviews are used to nuance that result. The approach “cognition, affection and action” was used for both research issues and serves as the theoretical bridge for the research questions in the study's abductive phase.

The study found that a large group of students experienced Existential health conversations to be strengthening, and there was a large group of youth that experienced self-rated lack of ability of the youth to identify and verbalise existential feelings. The conclusion of the study states that schools must continue to work on putting this aspect of health in focus with the concept of existential health.

A Case for Generative Linguistics in New Testament Exegesis: Surveying the Current Theoretical Landscape and Possible Applicability to Biblical Studies2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay surveys the current theoretical landscape of modern linguistics, asking whethe generative and possibly transformational linguistics can be applied to syntactic analysis of New Testament texts written in Koine Greek to find lingual hallmarks in the form of personal usage of syntactic rules that uniquely identify the authors of the texts. The conclusion is that there seems to be evidence that an application of a minimalist approach could make the detection of such lingual hallmarks possible.

Känsla, kropp och rum bland pilgrimsvandrare på 300-talet: En undersökning av praktisk kunskap i pilgrimstraditionen2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I want to see if using theories of practical knowledge can deepen the understanding of the tradition of Pilgrimage in the 4th century. I have selected three of the most known and well preserved travelogue texts: Egeria's travels, Jeromé s Epitaphium Paulae and Itinerarium Burdigalense. In this essay I will use the theories of practical knowledge to analyse expression of emotions, corporeality and spatiality. I will use a qualitative-inductive method and a hermeneutic method and also a comparative method to compare the expression.

Gud i ett kalejdoskop: en studie om gudsbilder före och efter exilen2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis consists of a redaction-critical analysis of Exodus 24:1-11. It is obvious that v 1-2; 9-11 and v 3-8 are originating from different narratives and hence the different sections shall be treated separately in the thesis. The redaction critical process is made difficult by the fact that there are many different traces of several theological traditions in the passage. One explanation of this is that chapter 24 is taking place where the narrative of Exodus is turning. At first, the chapter is giving an account of the escape from Egypt and the life in the wilderness, and thereafter, it turns to tell about the preparations for the arrival in Canaan. Yet another difficulty with the understanding of the section, from the point of redaction criticism that is shown in the analysis of the thesis, are the appearances of an unique blood ritual and an unique theophany, that both are lacking parallels. The final result of the thesis is that Exodus 24:1-11 is processing both an end to the previous part of Exodus, as well as the introduction of the beginning of the next chapter. Verses 3-8 constitute the end of the life in the wilderness through the making of the covenant and are reinforcing the change of the people, who have formerly been doubting JHVH, but now are turning into a holy nation. The origin of these verses is difficult to establish, but there are traces of a deuteronomistic redaction. Verses 1-2; 9-11 are rather building up to the introduction of the religious system, later to be established in chapter 25, in which the themes of priesthood and the temple are actualized, which in turn suggests a priestly redaction.

Feministisk tolkning som ett bidrag till interreligiösa möten?: Undersökning av Hagar som litterär gestalt i Genesis 162022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The theory and method I use in this essay is literary and feministic text critique, to discover the story of Genesis 16 anew. Earlier research in this field has studied Genesis within traditional exegesis since the 19th century and within feministic exegesis since the 1960s. This essay has three main parts. First, a theoretical description of my assignment, followed by analysis and summaries of these. Second, a discussion of this work and final conclusions.

In my study, the analysis sheds light on the literary character of Hagar in several ways, both in traditional and feministic exegesis. The traditional biblical study has given a solid ground in the reading of Genesis 16 and the feministic exegesis has given a clear perspective on Hagar as a woman in a patriarchal environment and interpretative tradition. Together they have given a rich telling on the literary character of Hagar.

In this essay I make a study of Genesis 16, with a focus on the literary character of Hagar. My point of departure is a sense of lacking the experience of Hagar in the book of Genesis, wondering if a feminist exegesis could give something new in this research. In order to discover eventual differences, I perform a traditional exegesis of Genesis 16, and then compare it with a feminist exegesis. Another question in my research is that of interreligious perspectives of today's society. From this point of view Hagar is a relevant character for both Muslims, Jews and Christians.

Förtryckande hopp och hopp för de förtryckta: En komparativ litteraturanalys om hoppets teologi i relation till förtryckande strukturer2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What if the narrative of hope, in fact, is hopeless for the oppressed? Even oppressive? If hope is hopeless, can hope be found in the middle of hopelessness? The aim of this study is to define a hopeful and sustainable theology of hope for the oppressed.

This study is a literature analysis on three authors offering different perspectives on oppression, as well as various models of hope. By connecting the lynching era of black americans in Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone, theories on affect in relation to oppression in Grave attending by Karen Bray, and the conflict of borders and dualism in Borderlands by Gloria Anzaldúa the study seeks to discuss hope in relation to oppression.

The literary material is initially categorized by each author separately and analyzed with three identical topics. The first topic- Oppression, defines how each author describes oppression. In the second topic- The Utopian Hope, hope is problematized in relation to oppression in the light of models presented by the author. Ultimately the third topic, The Hope of Gap, seeks to define how hope for the oppressed can be found in between hopelessness and hope.

The analysis indicates several problematic effects of a dualistic view of hopelessness and hope, effects that rather result in hopelessness than hope. To form a hopeful theology for the oppressed the analysis instead emphasizes the importance of the gap inbetween as a vital link between hopelessness and hope. Each author addresses this with different models, but with similar functions in transcending dualisms. In relation to Cone the gap can be understood as telling the stories of hopelessness as a source of hope. Bray highlights the importance of the grave in the christian narrative, as the gap connecting the crucifixion and resurrection where emotional affects such as grief, anger, sorrow, anxiety and depression are expressed. Anzaldúa defines the gap as a borderland, nepantla, which is a hybrid and performative state of change and becoming that she means has been cut straight through by unnatural oppressive boundaries.

In conclusion a hopeful hope for the oppressed confirms hopelessness and hope, as mutually dependent in a dialectical relationship, rather than as antagonists.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse the consensus decision making methods that are used at the annual conference of the Uniting Church in Sweden. The methods are analysed through the experiences of people that have attended the conference. Seven participants in the annual conference have been interviewed, and their expressed experiences have then been viewed through Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory, the theory of Jane Mansbridge et. al. regarding developments to the concept of deliberative democracy and through Paul Fiddes and his thoughts on finding the mind of Christ. The study concludes that the decision making methods has so far been well received and applied towards their objectives, though there is room for improvement.

AI-maskinernas autonomi –hot eller möjlighet?: Vilka etiska konsekvenser får relationenmellan AI-maskinen och människan?2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As we are living in an era of increased development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), newethical dilemmas arise. Some countries, states, technicians, developers of AI and researchersin different faculties have already observed that AI could get out of control and affectsocieties and human beings in a disastrous way. This thesis casts some light on the importanceof investigating one key concept in AI, “Autonomy”, and how different understandings of thedefinition have no effects on the ethical consequences. Immanuel Kant’s Moral Philosophyand Martha C. Nussbaums model of how to create capabilities for humans is the ethicaltheories used to evaluate different views on the concept autonomy. The first perspective onautonomy that is evaluated is Paula Boddington’s view that a definition of autonomy is notneeded but ethical codes for AI should be developed instead. The second view that isevaluated is the confusion about autonomy in machines and humans, and different ways ofunderstanding functional autonomy. This thesis argues for the importance of defining theconcept of autonomy for the benefit of mankind in working together for a benevolent AI. Aquestion that arises from what Kant calls “the Divine Spark” that all humans have and thatmake her worthy of respects; is it possible to put the “Divine Spark” into an AI?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this article, we discuss practical and pastoral theology in relation to Swedish theological education for future ordained clergy in the Church of Sweden. We look at how pastoral theology is understood in the Church of Sweden today and its relation to Practical Theology as an academic subject. We problematize the split between "academic" and "pastoral" theology and argue that pastoral theology should be understood as a part of the academic discipline Practical Theology. Practical Theology today is heavily theoretical and methodological, not least in the United States, the origin of much literature used in the Swedish context. Interesting as this may be from a research perspective, the discipline runs the risk of losing some of its relevance for undergraduate theological education. Here we discuss different aspects of pastoral and practical theology, and how they may feed into each other. We highlight the potential problems with a practical theology distancing itself from what has been called "the clerical paradigm" (in Sweden: pastoral theology), but also point to the importance of Practical Theology as an academic field in relation to ordination training. In Sweden, academic theology is still understood as supposedly "neutral", which complicates the relationship between "academic" and "pastoral" theology, as this obscures the influences from explicit normative and constructive practical theology on Swedish theological education. Drawing on practical theologians such as Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore and Mary McClintock Fulkerson, we discuss the normative and constructive ambitions in some practical theological schools of thought today. A changing understanding of Practical Theology may contribute to pastoral theology as a part of the ordination training in the Church of Sweden, but the normative assumptions need to be made explicit.

Nattvardssyn: En jämförelsestudie mellan systerkyrkorna: Svenska Missionskyrkan, Covenant Church i USA och Pactokyrkan i Ecuador2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

“Sjung i bedrövelsens mörker”: Hur Jeremias bok kan användas pastoralteologiskt idag2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the relevance of the book of Jeremiah today. How can it be used in a pastoral theology context? The paper dives in to five different passages with interesting themes as; repentance, sin, punishment, judgment, salvation and peace. Each passage has it ́s own theology and life interpretation in itself. The paper gives a short analysis and relevance for each selected passage and collects a summery in the end where the main message of the chosen texts is presented through various pastoral uses on an individual, group and structural level. This paper shows that the book of Jeremiah, and Jeremiah himself has a lot to offer to us today.

    Abstract [en]

My approach in this exploratory thesis is to lay the foundation for the development of pastoral care for a new time and a new social situation, and to build a foundation for later studies to be able to apply existential queer theological perspectives to the pastoral care work within the Church of Sweden. The work is thus hypoyhesisgenerating in order to develop a method. This is done on the basis of a literature review. By bringing together two theoretical areas, a foundation is created for the development with in the next stage of a new model and tools that improve practical interventions in theological contexts, and that provide new approaches to pastoral care when meeting confidants suffering from depression. athe diagnosis of depression is increasing drastically and affects the world health situation at large. We live in a secular/post-secualr age, when neo-liberalism with its system measures everything in terms of efficiency, productivity and profit. Existential perspectives are generally missing in the National Board of Health and Welfare´s guidelines regarding health today, and the question is what the transformative approach of existential queer theology can contribute to the theological and pastoral care work/meeting with depressed people. My theory is that these perspectives open new avenues for pastoral care in a theological context to contribute to personal health. It is about laying the faoundation for the development of pastoral care with a transformative perspective, for a new time and a new situation. The results and conclusions of the study will be used to develop practice in future research.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore whether activism can counteract and prevent exclusion in Christian tradition and practice. The analysis is helped by queer theologian Marcella Althaus-Reid as a primary theoretical standpoint. The study is based on Petra Carlsson's exploration of the queer nuns and activists: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the movement will be elucidated and interpreted through queer theology as expressed by Althaus-Reid. The method used is a textual analysis, where the study will compare Althaus-Reid’s queer theology and Carlsson’s radical material theology; with the aim to present, analyse and discuss activism.

First, Althaus-Reid’s queer theology is systematized thematically based on the studies analysis points: the body, symbols and activism. Secondly, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are presented and depicted through Carlsson’s interpretation of the movement. After this the queer nuns are compared to Althaus-Reid's queer theology, followed by a comparison of Althaus-Reid’s and Carlsson’s theologies. Lastly, with the help of Erik Gyll, the study discusses the situation for LGBT people in religious environments, such as church, and possible consequences of queer activism- and theology in Christian communities.

Althaus-Reid emphasises the need to do theology from different bodies/parts, especially those that have been excluded. She wants to liberate theological concepts from a heteronormative framework, which she believes limits people’s understanding of and access to God. Multiplicity is also prominent with Carlsson. She advocates for a performative viewpoint, that through adding expressions and expanding the imagery, it is also possible to create and change reality.

The analysis indicates a need for theology which can embrace real life and experiences. The research shows that for those who create and engage in alternative expressions or activism, such participation enables access to symbols and spaces from which they were previously excluded. Therefore, it is also reasonable to conclude that it is a relevant and fruitful approach as long as people are still excluded from Christian communities, and the church is not a safe place for everyone.

    Abstract [en]

The preaching event is a complex process of communication and interpretation. The aim of this study is to describe and discuss how the preaching event is affected when it is digitally mediated and involves so-called “religious digital creatives” (RDCs). This is achieved through a case study of the preaching event at two Church of Sweden (CoS) congregations that offered pre-recorded, digitally mediated worship services. The research questions guiding the study were: “When and how do the RDCs engage in the preaching event?” and “How can the effects of this engagement be understood in the light of homiletical theory drawing on the works of Mikhail Bakhtin?” The study found that RDCs engaged in the verbalization phase of the preaching event in several ways—including visualization, direction, editing, enhancement, and contextualization of the sermon—and thus contributed significantly to the preaching event. Furthermore, the RDCs exhibited notable relational authority—an authority based on negotiation, interdependence, and interaction. Employing homiletical theory that draws on Mikhail Bakhtin’s work, I argue that the RDCs in this case study are best understood as co-preachers who contribute to expanding the polyphony of the preaching event.

Co-preaching: The Practice of Preaching in Digital Culture and Spaces2023Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purposes of this article-based thesis are to explore and understand preaching as a practice in general, and the practice of preaching in digital culture and spaces in particular. Informed by the practicetheory of Theodore Schatzki, it presents the results of a cross-case analysis of four di!erent case studiesof the practice of preaching in digital culture and spaces in Swedish protestant churches. Based on theanalysis, I argue that the deep relationality of the practice of preaching involves not just humans andtexts but also material arrangements and that this feature often is ampli"ed in digital culture and spaces. While there were examples of a decrease, overall, there was an increase in interaction, negotiation, andinterdependency. In light of this, I contend that the practice of preaching in digital culture and spacesis characterized by co-preaching. Moreover, I argue that some of the implications of co-preaching arethe enabling and encouragement of dialogue, imagination, and the priestly function of the priesthoodof all believers, but also an increased vulnerability for the co-preachers involved.

    Abstract [en]

Ever since the theory of orality and literacy was introduced, it has provided scholars with a deeper understanding of the intertwined nature of culture and communication, as well as an appreciated tool for analysis. This is true also for the field of World Christianity. As the era of digital media emerged, the theory was developed as a tool to interpret digital culture as a ‘secondary orality’. This article critiques and cultivates this theory, by showing how the analytical tool of orality, literacy and secondary orality might be sharpened. This is done in dialogue with the practice of female preachers. Preaching thus serves as an example for a wider discussion on the development of the theory. The sharpening of the tool is done through letting the complexity of practices inform the theory. Through historical case studies of three strategically chosen female preachers, four questions are identified that would be important to consider when the theory and its developments are used in analysis: genre of communication, the categories of body and space, and how authority is construed. Finally, the cultivated theory is applied in the analysis of a female preacher in a digital culture and space.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines digitally-mediated sermon listening practices by interviewing twenty-nine listeners from Swedish Protestant congregations. The analysis draws on Theodore Schatzki’s practice theory, focusing on the entanglement of human activity, material arrangements surrounding the preaching event, and the ends of practices—including how changes to any or all of the above impact the practice in question. The study found that listeners strove to uphold the listening practices they were accustomed to from their respective churchesand attempted to carry these over into the digitally-mediated preaching event. To a large extent, they succeeded in opening and managing a “third room of preaching.” Furthermore, the studyhighlighted the importance of knowing the ends of these listening practices. The study alsodemonstrated the significance of material arrangements and how changes in these arrangementssometimes led to the obstruction—or even breakdown—of listening practices. However, changesin material arrangements also inspired new practices—pointing to the need to rethink listeningpractices that are merely borrowed from in-church services.

Between Kuriaké and Ekklesía: Tracing a Shift in Scandinavian Practical Theology Based on Handbooks in the Discipline2021In: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift, ISSN 0039-6761, Vol. 97, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With every major change in the understanding of Practical Theology in Scandinavia, there was an increase in the production of handbooks for the discipline. In this article, we take a closer look at such handbooks from the last two increases in production, tracing a shift the discipline went through from the 1990s up until 2020. The aim of this article is three-fold. Firstly, it describes a change in the understanding of Practical Theology through developments in Scandinavian handbooks over the last three decades. Secondly, it contextualizes these developments by giving an overview of other handbooks currently in use, primarily from the UK. Finally, it briefly discusses the implications of the shift in relation to a broader conceptualization of the discipline as suspended between two poles, defined by the authors as kuriaké and ekklesía.
