Paul’s Discourse on Slavery and Freedomin the Light of Stoic Philosophy2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on Paul’s view on freedom for believers in the context ofslavery. Paul’s understanding comes through in his metaphorical usage of slavelanguage in 1 Cor 7:20-24. In this thesis, a comparison between the teaching ofPaul and that of the Stoics Seneca, Musonius, and Epictetus will support myinterpretation of Paul’s opinion regarding slavery and freedom. I first explore howPaul and the three Stoics advocate for their understanding of freedom for slaves, and then I compare Paul’s theological interpretation with the moral values of thethree Stoics. There is no doubt that Paul, Seneca, Musonius and Epictetus wereaware of the cruel physical judgments and hardships, which slaves suffered in thecontext of slavery. Though neither Paul nor the three Stoics expressed an intentionto terminate the existing hierarchical social structure and slavery system, they alsodid not ignore the physical judgments and hardships placed upon slaves. Theteachings of Paul, Seneca, Musonius and Epictetus testify that they had a commonwill to end, or at least reduce, the exploitation and dehumanization of slaves. Theircommon interest is to promote the possibility of freedom, equal fairness and kindlytreatments for slaves. Both groups preferred freedom and dignity for human beingsby ignoring the social standards and social identification of the Roman society. However, they emphasized inner freedom rather than the social freedom of the slaves.Aim of thesis: To compare Paul’s attitude to slavery and his metaphoricallanguage of slavery and freedom with that of the Stoic philosophers, Seneca,Epictetus, and Musonius.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine what kind of ingroup conversion prototypes the authors of Luke-Acts and the Gospel of John express through conversion narratives and conceptual metaphors. By analysing the works of the authors I find a range of expressions conceptualising the act or process of conversion to faith in Jesus. These expressions contribute to forming an comprehensive conversion narrative, which has part in forming and setting boundaries for the ingroup of believers towards the outgroup(s) of non-believers. The ingroup conversion prototype for Luke-Acts shows norms of outgroup love, merciful and generous actions as well as good works and inclusion led by the Holy Spirit. The ingroup conversion prototype in John sets up norms of transformation through baptism, ingroup love and a breaking with the darkness of the world.

The aim is further on to examine how these prototypes correspond to the models of conversion presented by Lewis R. Rambo. The results show that Luke-Acts view of conversion corresponds both to the model of traditional transition and intensification. The Gospel of John, on the other hand, fits only in the model of traditional transition.

satan är inte Satan: Ett undersökande textstudium om Satans framställning2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Satan or satan? Hebrew word שטן (satan) has been interpreted both as either a resistance or an opponent, but also as a name, Satan.

This essay deals with the interpretation and meaning of various texts by שטן to see how the representation of the character Satan emerged. The essay deals with why satan became Satan and how the character Satan became a malicious figure through an ambiguous interpretation of שטן.

The result of the study shows that because of the definite article ה in front of שטן the word שטן should not be read as a name but as the opponent, the satan.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay takes it’s approach in the role of the Serpent in the Garden story based on the Jewish and Christian tradition’s view of the Serpent in that narrative. The question the study is based on is whether the Serpent has changed character from the creation of the Garden story until about 400 years AD in Christian tradition. My conclusion in this reception-historical analysis of the Serpent is that it has different meanings in Jewish and Christian tradition. The Gnostic texts that began to emerge a couple of hundred years BC were not recognized in the Jewish tradition, while in the Christian tradition they lived with the interpretations, which is not least seen in the Book of Revelations, which is canon in the Christian tradition today. Augustine uses the Book of Revelation’s interpretations of the Serpent, where the Serpent is Satan, which the Gnostic texts write and the Book of Revelation is influenced by. Augustine is so wrapped up in the fact that the Serpent is Satan that he misses what it says in the most important and introductory sentence of Genesis 3:1.

My conclusion is that because God created the Serpent, and therefore the Serpent can not be Satan because God is not evil. The dualistic worldview that emerges from God does not appear in the text, but the Christian interpretations of the Serpent have departed from the text, while the Jewish tradition has remained in the text’s view of the Serpent. The Serpent is not Satan based on Genesis 3.

Existential public health and existential care in secular and interfaith contexts2022In: Complexities of Spiritual Care in Plural Societies: Education, Praxis and Concepts / [ed] Anne Hege Grung, Berlin, Boston: De Gruyter , 2022, p. 191-236Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The existential dimension, some times referred to as the religious or spiritual dimension, is essential for health and health-related qualityof life (HQoL). Research has established a significant link between the existential health dimension and various conditions and diagnoses. The lack of an established definition of the existential dimension constitutes a challenge. Therefore, the starting point in this article is operationalisation. The World Health Organization(WHO) developed transcultural survey for measuring health-related quality of life, including a model for spiritual, religious, and personal beliefs (WHOQOL-SRPB). This article first presents existential aspects relevant to HQoL and then a model for systematic existential health interventions with the SRPB aspects. Finally, it presents the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) model with the addition of the existential health dimension.

Det profetiska kallets baksida: Om John Howard Yoders teologiskt motiverade övergrepp2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to discuss the theologically motivated sexual violence of John Howard Yoder, in the light of the writings of queer theologian Marcella Althaus-Reid and also feminist theologian Mary Daly, and others. Attention is put on how the hurt persons might be left out of a theology for redemption of the sinner, how an idealized view of the congregation risk hurting the personal capacity for judgement, and on how a prophetic calling to cross boundaries might end up protecting transgressive violence.

Du skall färdas i blåsig frihet: Trons språk hos Anna Greta Wide (1920–1965)2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Spindeln i nätet?: En studie av musikledarskap i Equmeniakyrkan2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Josefus i relation till Assumptio Mosis: en jämförande undersökning2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is based on trying to understand the relationship that exists between Josephus’ writings and the pseudepigraph Assumptio Mosis. Although the comparisons made between the texts in this essay are not enough to give a definite answer, none of the examples exclude that Josephus may have used Assumptio Mosis as a primary source. Rather, there are indications in which a direct relationship between Josephus and Assumptio Mosis potentially could explain from where Josephus acquires some of his source material, especially for his narrative of the time period around 4 BCE–6 CE.

Bibeläventyret i praktiken: Ett religionspedagogiskt koncept för grundskolan2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Lars Levi Laestadius (1800-1861) was active as a priest in the Swedish church in the northernmost parts of Sweden. After experiencing a transformative and life-changing spiritual breakthrough, which he himself has later called his rebirth and the moment when he received a living faith, he came to gather large audiences and give rise to a revival movement, which still bears his name today. Although Laestadius was active as a priest, he sharply criticized many conditions in the contemporary church.

The purpose of this essay has been to investigate whether, and if so how, this criticism as presented in his sermons and writings can be linked to his Bible use, i.e. his reading and interpretation of the Bible and the authority he gives the Bible. For my study, I have closely read a large number of his extant sermons and published writings. The study also briefly summarises the central elements of Laestadius' theology, as well as what he perceives to be the Church's main mission. The study shows how his criticism is based on his use of the Bible and also how, through a far-reaching allegorical interpretation of the Bible, he uses different texts from both the Old and the New Testaments in his argumentation.

Begär i Romarbrevet: En undersökning av begreppet ἐπιθυμία i Romarriket och Romarbrevet2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine and interpret Paul’s usage and mening of the concept of ἐπιθυμία in the Epistle to the Romans. My examination and interpretation has been conducted through exegetical literary analysis of Romans 1:18–32, 6–8 and 13, where I with the support of previous research, first introduced the concept of ἐπιθυμία in its historical context. Then I show how the concept of ἐπιθυμία plays a key role in understanding his argument in the Epistle to the Romans.

Gudsbilder i kyrkohandboken: En komparativ litteraturstudie2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the image of God in the common worship liturgy book that was taken into use by the church of Sweden in the year of 2018 and compare it with the image of God in the previous common worship book which was released in 1986. The end result shows that the big difference between these two liturgy books is that the liturgy book released in 1986 presents an image of God that focuses on the gender of God. Compared to the 2017 liturgy book that instead of focusing of the gender of God presents an image of God that presents how God acts, not who God is. End result has been viewed from two perspectives, a feminist theology point of view and an apophatic point of view. These perspectives combined with the end result from the comparative study has shown that of these two theologies the feminist theology fits best into the 2017 common worship liturgy book, compared to the apophatic theology. Although the study has shown that these two theological perspectives share more than just a few things. One of the most central similarities is that the language plays a big part in the centralities in both teological perspectives. In the apophatic theology the language is considered to be limited and that our human language lacks the potential to fully understand God. The feminist theology focuses on the fight against structures like gender, sex and power. When using especially these three parts it is possible to use language to find the patriarchal symbolic language that has an influence on us and effects us.

Digital själavård i Svenska kyrkan – utveckling innan, under och efter covid-19 pandemin: Kvalitativ studie i Uppsala pastorat2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Själavård i tider av covid-19 pandemi: utifrån Berit Okkenhaugs själavårdsinriktningar2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Var är leksakerna?: En pilotstudie om barnens plats i kyrkorummet2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to discover and problematize the physical place dedicated to children in church buildings in the Lutheran Church of Sweden. I also investigate how children develop according to James W Fowlers theory Stages of faith, depending on how and where we let the children be in the church building. I have completed three interviews in three congregations in Stockholm to find out how they place the children and their thoughts about it. As it turns out, where to place the children in the church building is not easy since there are many aspects to consider.

By making the church building available for people, especially children, in different stages of faith people are able to develop their faith in a good way

Jesu konflikthantering: Konfliktmedling i Lukasevangeliet tolkad med hjälp av nutida konfliktkunskap och moralpsykologi2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines Jesus' conflict counseling in the Gospel of Luke, by conducting a literary analysis of Luke 9:46-48, 12:13-21 and 22:24-30, which are stories of conflicts where Jesus himself is not involved. The texts have been analyzed in their historical context and are illuminated by heuristic use of contemporary conflict theory and moral psychology. Through this reading, a pattern emerges: Jesus' main method of dealing with conflicts is to correct the attitudes of those involved in conflict.

Juridiska metaforer i Jobs bok: En analys av hur de juridiska metaforernaanvänds, utvecklas och värderas i Jobs bok2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how legal metaphors are used, developed and valuated through the book of Job. By the method of close reading I analyze the speeches of Job in order to investigate if and how the legal metaphors maintain tension between source and main domain, if they are meaningful, are used in a creative way and developed through the book of Job. The legal language is used by the prophets to explain the suffering of the people by ascribing God to the roles of prosecutor and judge who punishes the people for their violation of the covenant. In the book of Job the friends of Job represent tradition. They promote the theory of retribution and claim that Job is being judged and punished for his sins. Job breaks with the tradition and wish es to meet God in court, and assigns different legal roles to God; plaintiff, accused, witness, his legal representative and the criminal. Through out the book of Job the tension between God and all these different roles is maintained and discussed. Job cannot meet God in court because they are unequal and there is no one who has authority over God. To behold God criminally accused seems inappropriate because God is the foundation of justice. However Job keeps using the metaphors in his complaint before God. The oath in chapter 31 shows the absurdity to put all different legal roles of God into one model but nevertheless shows how the legal metaphors are useful as a language of complaint. In the speeches of God there are no legal metaphors and Job is responding by admitting his limitation in explaining the works of God and by promising to be quiet. The friends of Job are being rebuked for having talked wrong about God. They used the legal metaphors to explain God and the works of God. The legal metaphors are not to be used as explanatory models but provide a platform for the innocent to form their complaint for vindication.

Vad är nattvardsgången för oss?: En studie om hur gudstjänstdeltagare i Stockholm upplever och tolkar nattvardsgången i Svenska kyrkan2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study treats participants' attitudes and interpretations of participation in communion within the denomination Church of Sweden. This study has had an inductive approach by conducting interviews and questionnaires during the spring of 2023. Interviews were conducted with 6 informants and questionnaires were handed out at one worship with mass on 2 April, which generated 68 answered questionnaires. The questions this study has sought to answer are:

    - Which attitudes do worship participants have towards walking procession and kneeling when participating in communion?

    - Which interpretations do worship participants have regarding walking procession and kneeling when participating in communion?

The result which in itself is an inductive processing of the material was analyzed by two main theoretical standpoints. The first was implicit ecclesiology and theology and the second was participation. What emerged was that there are a variety of attitudes and interpretations regarding both walking procession and kneeling, when participating in communion. The result points towards that participating in communion overall is a rite people appreciate and have a variety of interpretations regarding. The majority of the informants tend to show a more positive attitude towards walking procession when participating in communion contra kneeling. The material is constricted regarding only having handed out questionnaires at oneworship occasion with a walking procession. For future studies within this field, it would be sufficient to also hand out questionnaires at worship occasions where kneeling, when participating in communion, is the normative practice.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to answer the question of if and how the theologian Sallie McFagues modelfor understanding God that she presents in her book The Body of God can be furtherdeveloped to be more fitting for church and individual today. To answer this question I havecompleted a comparative text analysis of Andrew Linzeys book Why Animal SufferingMatters , Elisabeth A. Johnsons book Ask the Beasts and Rosemary Radford Ruethers bookGaia & God . The views of the three theologians is presented thematically: firstly in regardsto animal rights, secondly in regards to human environmental impact.Based on the fact that animals are sentient; that they are unable to communicateeffectivly with humans; and that animals are equally created by God as humans are, Linzey,Johnson and Radford Ruether argues that animals should not be unnecessarily harmed. With regard to environmental impact the three theologians argues that the whole ofcreation belongs to God and that God made humans stewards of it. The stewardship meansthat we have a responsibility to care for the earth rather than exploiting it.Based on these arguments I find that McFagues model can be further developedmainly by creating a more clear animal theology and by making a connection betweenenvironmental impact and social injustices.

    Abstract [en]

The prophet Zechariah was active during 520-518 BC, after the exile in Babylon and before the Second Temple was built. The Prophet's book carries clear eschatological features and conveys a message about the restoration of Jerusalem. A specific feature of Zechariah 3 is the presence of the angel of the Lord and Satan standing on his right side. During this time the Israelites had knowledge of Babylonian culture and religion, where the battle myth occurs and a dualistic view of God. Where the good and the evil are in conflict with each other. I therefore wonder if this awareness may have characterized Zechariah's night vision in chapter 3. In this essay, I will examine Chapter 3, where the reader meets the high priest Joshua, the angel of the Lord, and the Prosecutor. With the hope of being able to contribute to a deeper understanding of Zechariah 3's purpose and message.

Änglar utan vingar: En studie av ängelns funktion i Genesis2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses public confession of sins according to Tertullian (160-225 CE) as an emotionally and socially costly signal of commitment to a religious group, early 3rd century Christianity in Carthage. Here "public" means "before the community of believers" rather than "before society in general". What group dynamic functions did the ritual have and why did people accept undergoing the shame of public confession of sins?
