    Abstract [en]

The article examines the phenomenon of nationalism as such and its Eastern Christian variations. In particular, two main theories of nationalism are described: modern and pre-modern. There are also two stages of the development of nationalism: emancipatory and oppressive. The former is healthier than the latter. The article focuses on the Orthodox versions of nationalism that are consistent with the traditional structure of local churches. In the Orthodox world, national individuality in combination with church locality can be either ethnic or civilizational. The former strengthens a homogeneous national identity in the Balkan style. The latter is Orthodox neo-imperialism, which is incompatible with nation-building. Their incompatibility often leads to conflicts and even wars, as in the case of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

    Abstract [en]

During the 5th-6th century multiple clashes of theological debate engulfed the Roman empire after the heated council controversies of Ephesus and Chalcedon. The aftermath sparked factions and formulated alliances dependent on their hermeneutical and dogmatic positions. This study inquires Narsai of Nisbis and Jacob of Serugh who are characterized by the late-antique’s drama and compares their hermeneutical backgrounds in relation to their beliefs.

Ecclesiology and ethnography - issues and dilemmas in a conversation2019In: International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church, ISSN 1474-225X, E-ISSN 1747-0234, Vol. 19, no 4, p. 302-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to introduce the Ecclesiology and Ethnography conversation by highlighting some of its characteristics. According to the inquiry, significant contributors to the conversation understand ethnography as a form of theology and see ethnographic and ecclesiological modes of theologising as an alternative to idealist ecclesiological accounts. The article also shows how participation is a key theological theme as well as a research approach. Two pressing issues, that are highlighted, concern normativity in relation to doctrine and tradition and the role of theology in qualitative theological and ecclesiological research. The article ends with discussions on two dilemmas in ethnographic ecclesiology and with suggestions on how to deal with them responsibly.

Lokal kyrklig identitet: En studie av implicit ecklesiologi med exemplet Svenska kyrkan i Flemingsberg2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

(Summary: Local Church Identity – a Study of Implicit Ecclesiology with the Example of the Church of Sweden in Flemingsberg)

The focus of this thesis is the concrete identity of the church. The study has been conducted within the church of Sweden in a parish in a southern Stockholm suburb. The aim of the thesis is to gain knowledge of how the identity of the Church of Sweden is manifested at a local level in a suburban context and to develop an ecclesiological approach for conducting such a study. The overall ecclesiological approach of the study is defined as a theologically reflective and abductive. The church is understood as a concrete historical and social agent in the light of God’s presence and therefore both theology and social theory is needed in studying its identity. The approach is abductive in the sense that the study process can be seen as a continuing dialogue between the theoretical reflections and the establishment of empirical material.

The study is conducted within an ecclesiological framework, and the concept implicit ecclesiology is central. Implicit ecclesiology is defined as an understanding of what it is to be church that is illuminated by applying a theoretical perspective on expressions of the concrete church. In the thesis the implicit ecclesiology is illuminated by using a theological understanding of the identity of the church and theories on organizational identity.

To analyze the material from the ecclesiological field-study in the parish a theoretical model for analysis is developed. The purpose of the model is to make it possible to analyze and describe what kind of social body that is manifested in the material.

An approach that draws on Niklas Luhmanns’ theory of organizations as social systems is used. Out of that theory two main concepts are defined: self-descriptions and identity-structures. The concepts of practice, identity-space, strategy and tactics are also added to the model to reveal concrete expressions of the social body and telos it is striving towards.

The analysis of the material gives a rather complex picture of the social body and the ecclesiology implicit in its manifestations. The analysis of the self-descriptions used by the local church show that, to a large extent, a rather narrow social body is described, consisting mainly of employees and the local church council. Three identity-structures are also revealed that in a significant way form the social body: one around the employees, one in relation to worship and a third in relation to the geographical borders of the parish.

Implicit in the result of the analysis is an understanding of Christ as being present in the world where a fundamental relational pattern of the incarnation liberates people to a community with one another and with God. The analysis shows how this, by the church, is understood to be embodied in a special way in the liturgy of the worship. Without this embodiment of the relational pattern of the incarnation in the social body of the church, Christ would not be present in the world. There is, then, an implicit understanding of the concrete church as being an instrument for God’s presence in the world through Christ.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I have studied wedding services in the Church of Sweden, as they are actually performed. I do this from a liturgical-theological perspective, a performance- perspective and from the perspective of ritual studies. According to the performance- perspective the wedding service can be seen as consisting of different scripts, for example, the normative script of the handbook, the script of the wedding-couple and the script of the minister. The main question is: What is constructed when these three scripts meet in a wedding service? I first study each script. I give an account for the script of the handbook and analyse it by placing it in a historical, liturgical and theological context. The script of the wedding couple and the minister I uncover by participant observations of three wedding services and interviews with the couples and ministers acting in these services. Thereafter I analyse the scripts of the couples and the minsters looking at themes that appear to be important in these scripts and in the handbook. Such themes are the wedding service as a service of blessing, the legal aspect of the service, the construction of family through marriage, love, the service as a ritual, the setting of the wedding, the role of the minister, the importance of participation and the role of the music. I conclude that the three scripts are indeed three very different scripts, but when they are juxtaposed a new meaning is constructed. This can occur even if the script are not correlating or even to some extent collides. One important factor for meaning to be constructed is the ritualization, acts that make the service a ritual. This seems to be more important than the fact that the scripts correlate. Another important factor for meaning to be constructed is that the scripts actually meet, that they actually are juxtaposed together. For this to happen the minister has to clarify his/her own script and be responsive to the couple’s script. Then the minister can relate their script to blessing, prayer and scripture. Normatively, I conclude that the wedding service becomes a meaningful wedding service when the couple’s scripts are related to the greater, transcendent Script

    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Centurion’s Faith in Pauline perspective: Using Gal 3:21–26 and Rom 3:21–24 to understand Matt 8:5–132021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to investigate how two Pauline pericopes (Gal 3:21–26 and Rom3:21–24) can help us to understand Matt 8:5–13. The paper has four research questions: Whatdid the role of πίστις (“faith” or “trust”) played in Roman culture in general? What role did itplay in the centurions’ relationship to both superiors and subordinates in the Roman’s army?Which principle of faith does Paul establish in Gal 3:21–26 and Rom 3:21–24? How canPaul’s principle be used as a key to understand the faith of the centurion in Matt 5:8–13? Tofind the results of the four research questions, the paper used qualitative method throughsocial-rhetorical Criticism and narrative method. The results of this paper show that theGreco-Roman society was immersed in the ideology of patronage where there was always abeneficiary and a client. Πίστις means two sorts of relationship, one that was vertical and theother that was horizontal. Paul presents πίστις as the one who has divided the time in twoperiods. the old period that was under the power of sin and the new period that is under thepower of faith. The purpose of God was to save the whole creation through πίστις Χριστοῦ.Believers in πίστις Χριστοῦ are the coheirs of Abraham as “spiritual” descendants. Finally,Πίστις Χριστοῦ unites people of different social and ethnical status as one family. Thus, according to the Matthean point of view, the people who do not believe in πίστις Χριστοῦwill be judged by God.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Questions concerning children's rights and children's place in society have been on the agenda for some decades now. Parallell to this movement questions about children's place in the bible, in the church and in systematic theology have entered the academical conversation. This paper attempts to find a method to investigate whether systematic theology as we know it, has the tools to address these new questions. Axel Honneth's theory on recognition will be important, since the three levels of recognitions he describes are designed to point out the difference between rights and solidarity, between formal recognition and the recognition that sprouts from genuine intrest in shared experience.

The thougths from Honneth are combined with John Wall's argumentation on seeing the child as a full humna being, as a subject. Risto Saarinen's discussion on asymmetrical relations, adds an important perspective. From these three theories, a method is formulated for putting the child in focus on the theological agenda. The gain is not only the recognition of a neglected group, measured to one third of humankind. The new viewpiont shreds its light upon questions important to all of us. The method is a systematic theological tool both useful for pointing out inconsistencies and to suggest solutions to the very same problems.

In the final discussion I show how this could be done by adressing the children's place in the postmodern family project, described by Katarina Westerlund, and children as liturgical leaders with the help of Karin Rubensson's thesis.

Guds andedräkt ger liv: En jämförelse av begreppen neshama och ruach2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Emotions in Biblical Law: A Cognitive Science Approach2011Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study pioneers the use of insights from cognitive sciences, such as evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and developmental psychology, as heuristic tools for interpreting ancient texts. The approach could be described as ‘psycho-biological’. The focus is on emotions in the various Pentateuchal legal collections. Kazen discusses the role of disgust, empathy, fear, and a sense of justice, for particular moral and ritual issues: purity and holiness; humanitarian concern for vulnerable categories; ethnocentrism and xenophobia; divine punishment and demonic threat; revenge, compensation, and ransom (kofer), together with removal (kipper) rites.

The book consists of two main parts, framed by an introductory chapter and a concluding discussion. In the first part, Kazen explores cognitive foundations, including biological and neuroscientific underpinnings for basic affects, and the role of culture in shaping both conventional morality and ritual behaviour. Four particular emotions are then outlined. In the second part, these insights from cognitive science are applied in analyses of particular texts. After an overview of the Pentateuchal legal collections, each of the four emotions is dealt with in a separate chapter. Kazen continuously relates a cognitive science approach to more traditional source and redaction critical analysis, regarding them as complementary.

As a result, the Pentateuchal legal collections are seen as emotional texts, expressing strong affects –  which influences our understanding of the character of Israelite ‘law’. Kazen suggests that interaction and conflict between various emotions can explain discrepancies and tensions between humanitarian concerns and ethnocentrism, and between empathy and justice. He also demonstrates that viewing emotions as common denominators contains a potential for solving some difficult and long-standing conundrums. He argues that a focus on the human embodied experience rather than on theological convictions and theoretical ideas may avoid some interpretative dead ends and open up new avenues for understanding ancient texts.

    Abstract [en]

Recent decades have seen a growing interest in various quarters in questions concerning the human mind. Today we can identify an array of disciplines which, due to their focus on cognition, can be subsumed under the heading “cognitive science(s).” ese include, among others, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, social and developmental psychology, as well as linguistics and some sociological approaches. e questions concern issues such as the phylogeny and ontogeny of an inner world and a theory of mind. ey also deal with the complicated interplay between biology and culture, as well as the role of language and emotions in a functioning rationality and the development of a moral capacity.

Etik och retorik i Jesustraditionen: kognitiva och psyko-biologiska perspektiv2021Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Impurity and Purification in Early Judaism and the Jesus Tradition2021Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This collection of essays by Thomas Kazen focuses on issues of purity and purification in early Judaism and the Jesus tradition. During the late Second Temple period, Jewish purity practices became more prominent than before and underwent substantial developments. These essays advance the ongoing conversation and debate about a number of key issues in the field, such as the relationship between ritual and morality, the role and function of metaphor, and the use of evolutionary and embodied perspectives. Kazen’s research stands in constant dialogue with the major currents and main figures in purity research, including both historical (origin, development, practice) and cognitive (evolutionary, emotional, conceptual) approaches.

Issues of Impurity in Early Judaism2010Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this volume of collected articles and papers on impurity and purification in early Judaism, Kazen focuses primarily on questions of the impurity of discharges and the practice of hand-washing before meals. Kazen uses both literary and historical methods, as well as approaches based on cognitive science; the analysis covers texts from the Pentateuch, Qumran, the New Testament, and some Jewish Hellenistic authors.

Some chapters are based on unpublished papers, and others have been recently published in various journals; two are based on material and arguments similar to a couple of forthcoming articles for volumes that will not always be easily found by potential readers. Several of the essays relate to or complement each other, thus making this collection very convenient for the reader interested in the topic.
