Öppna vyer i 200-talets kristna akademi: Origenes attityd gentemot grekisk filosofi och kristna apokryfer2021In: Öppna vyer – lång sikt: Festskrift till Owe Kennerberg / [ed] Thomas Kazen & Susanne Wigorts Yngvesson, Stockholm: Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm , 2021, p. 175-186Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Why We Sing: Music, Word, and Liturgy in Early Christianity2022Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In a seminal study, Cur cantatur?, Anders Ekenberg examined Carolingian sources for explanations of why the liturgy was sung, rather than spoken. This multidisciplinary volume takes up Ekenberg’s question anew, investigating the interplay of New Testament writings, sacred spaces, biblical interpretation, and reception history of liturgical practices and traditions. Analyses of Greek, Latin, Coptic, Arabic, and Gǝʿǝz sources, as well as of archaeological and epigraphic evidence, illuminate an array of topics, including recent trends in liturgical studies; manuscript variants and liturgical praxis; Ignatius of Antioch’s choral metaphor; baptism in ancient Christian apocrypha; and the significance of late ancient altar veils.

Ett förvandlat sinnelag: En studie över distinktionen mellan φρόνημα τῆς σαρκὸς och φρόνημα τοῦ πνεύματος i Romarbrevets åttonde kapitel2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about how five different exegetical researchers view the historical Jesus teaching about the kingdom of God as present and the possibility for it to be in continuity with his jewish tradition and contemporary context. Jesus announces that the kingdom of God is present and that this present reality is revealed through the miraculous deeds of Jesus. The idea of the kingdom of God as present is in some ways to be found in different texts and certain sects within Second Temple Judaism. Through their work on the historical Jesus the five exegetes shows that, even though the language and the symbol of the kingdom of God is similar, Jesus is in some ways doing something radically new and different in his use of the term “the kingdom of God.” By comparing certain logions with certain texts from Second Temple Judaism, this study shows that there is some continuity, but also that Jesus is presenting a new type of kingdom, a new type of presence and another kind of movement when presenting the kingdom of God as present.

"Där barmhärtighet och kärlek bor, där finns också Gud": Implicit ecklesiologi i Huddinge församlings diakoni2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates formation during ministerial education and training by interviewing five newly ordained pastors within the Uniting Church in Sweden about their experience of what the Pastor’s program at Stockholm School of Theology have contributed to for being shaped and prepared as pastor. The study, which is qualitative and abductive, relates theoretically to Benjamin Bloom's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning domains that are translated into pastoral contexts for studying what the education has contributed to, as well as to David Kelsey's Athens-Berlin concept to compare the educational ideals of pastors, with the program’s institutional form of education.

The results show that the factors that were achieved as most important in shaping and preparing the new pastors are: Internship and practice, Teachers and staff, Fellow students, Teaching, Retreats, devotions, individual conversations & joint trips, and Congregational life and pastors. These are summarized as Practice, Relations, Teaching and Practices (PRTP). The result also shows that it is crucial in which way these are conducted. The ways that have been positively formative for the pastors are described in the essay.

The analysis shows that the pastors' ideals of education drawn from Kelsey, applied to Swedish post-secondary forms of education can be understood as a mixture of the ideals of university and folk high school, with an emphasis on folk high school - and that this conflicts with the church’s pastor's program whose form of education is a combination of university and church with a clear emphasis on university. Based on these findings, the study presents four opportunities for the Uniting Church in Sweden and the Stockholm School of Theology to reduce this tension. The essay also discusses similarities and differences with previous studies among other things in terms of what shapes and prepares for service, the possibility of three-part learning objectives, and the question of educational form.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A sermon after a crisis or traumatic event requires great pastoral care. How do we put what happened into words? When things are so devastating that words are not enough? How do we speak about hope and despair in the midst of a crisis? This thesis aims to analyze sermons in the Church of Sweden after the attack on Drottninggatan, Stockholm, Sweden in 2017. Nine sermons held in the weeks following the attack have been analyzed. The theoretical background and theme of the analysis has been psychotraumatology and trauma-informed theology. The thesis’ process has been an inductive approach, as it begins in the material and then compares these against the selected aspects. The questions asked in the thesis are: “What qualities can be found in these sermons after the terrorist attack at Drottninggatan?“ As well as two sub-questions about the respective perspectives: “Which psychotraumatological perspectives were found in the sermons?” and “What perspectives of trauma-informed theology were found in the sermons?”

The analysis of sermons and the answer to the first question resulted in five common themes: Responsibility and humanity, The terrorist attack and evil, The Bible and God, Despair and Hope. Based on this, both theoretical aspects have been used to analyze the results.

    Abstract [en]

Altizer, the academic bad guy, the metaphysical modernist, the nutty, repetitive preacher who, in our first encounter, told me all about his actual meeting with Satan—is he an apt thinker for the current planetary crisis? This article argues he could be. By relating Altizer to Gilles Deleuze I am not arguing that Altizer is inspired by and in that sense belongs to a vitalist or hermetic thought tradition but I am arguing thatwhen read through a Deleuzian lens, material aspects of his metaphysicsstand forth, as does the contemporary relevance of the peculiar stylethrough which his metaphysics materializes.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Christ under Reconstruction: From the Face to the Celestial Machine2018In: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift, ISSN 0039-6761, Vol. 94, no 3, p. 167-177Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Starting in Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's critique of the image of the face of Christ, the article experimentally explores the notion of the cross-event as machine. Through an encounter between Deleuze and Guattari's concept of the abstract machine and Russian avant-garde artist and thinker Liubov Popova's notion of construction, the article explores the multiplicity rather than the singular identity of the Christ-notion; the ongoing creative aspect rather than the origin–telos spectrum. Thus, the article invites non-theological thinkers to throw new light on a theological dilemma: the exclusive and authoritarian aspects of the Christ figure. Finally, alternative images of Christ to be found in the history of Christianity are suggested.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to understand what is meant by spiritual care (andlig vård) as structured within the founding statutes and guidelines of the hospital church (Sjukhuskyrkan), the correctional services (Kriminalvården), and the health care services (hälso- och sjukvården) in Sweden. How the possibilities and limitations of spiritual care in Sweden are made visible from a socio-religious perspective is an overarching research question that forms the basis for the three sub-questions on how spiritual care is defined, designated and structured. The basis for the empirical material is partly text material from laws, presentations, guidelines, directives and basic documents for spiritual care and partly interview material from selected informants.Parts of the Constitution of Society by Anthony Giddens (1984) became the theoretical perspective. The method chosen emanated in the qualitative methods of Kirsti Malterud. The conclusions are that the structure for spiritual care in Sweden is strictly community-centered, and is reproduced through the individual actors, where the dominance of the Hospital Church maintains another ongoing and changing social system in spiritual care. This can create an unbalanced social structure in the arena of spiritual care. SST, Myndigheten för stöd till trossamfund (the Swedish Agency for Support to Faith Communities) and the Hospital Church have the means of power through the external caregiver structure on which spiritual care is based. This structure applies in a similar way to the spiritual care within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, that reports structural imbalances that can lead to social vulnerability, discrimination and intolerance in prisons and demanding a Swedish vocational education. A clearer, patient-centered, approach is pointed out in this study, where patients with an existential crisis can be treated with either a general spirituality or a religious spirituality, where the concept of existential health through existential support can then be about both spiritual care and nursing.

Med segerhjärtat kämpa mitt livs kamp: Omvändelseberättelser i baptistisk årskrönika Betlehem kristlig kalender 1886 till 19802018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

That conversion is a central concept for Baptists and narrative an important part of their culture is made clear by Betlehem kristlig kalender, a yearbook published from 1886 to 1980.The aim of this thesis is to survey and analyse conversion narratives within the Baptist movement as reflected in Betlehem, by investigating what narrative expressions form the body of the stories, what is given precedence, emotional or cognitive expressions, their soul, and finally what theological themes are developed around the concept of conversion. The method employed is, following a reading of all the issues of Betlehem, to distinguish and extract the stories that are narrative in character according to Hindmarsh’s criteria. That is to say, stories that point beyond the individual to a larger principle of meaningfulness and that are powerfully thought-provoking, with a sense that their beginning, middle and end form a unified whole. The texts extracted are further analysed to find the distinguishing characteri-stics of the material in the light of the dissertation’s aim.The results of the study show that the narratives in Betlehem contain a good deal of drama. They have a clear direction from something to something, with the actual conversion forming a climax. The darkest situations are transformed, following a struggle, to the most ethereal light when morning comes, bringing peace and assurance that conversion has taken place. Women often serve as models, having already experienced conversion. It is their husbands and sons who are the object of their attention and are led towards conversion by their entreaties, arguments and also tears. Salvation, as the experience was often called, clearly changes people’s personalities. Following conversion, individuals take greater responsibility for their own and their family’s situation and it is not unusual that, in their new lives, they start to tell others of their experience. The narratives in Betlehem show a marked preponderance of the emotional over the cognitive for the first 60 years, up to the 1950s, when feelings make way for reason and good examples. One reason for this change could be that the instantaneous conversion of revivalism is replaced with an emphasis on a rational, planned decision and commitment. Another reason could be the ecumenical realities of the time, with church membership based on baptism rather than a confession of faith. The cognitive aspects, as well as postmodernism’s loss of belief in metanarratives, may be mentioned as further possible explanations. The Baptist process of conversion, its “golden chain”, interpreted through the constitution of the first Baptist church in Borekulla and the Betlehem narratives, can be defined as anthropocentric and summed up as comprising the following stages: (1) The individual is awakened from their indifference and realises their sinfulness. (2) The individual senses a danger in their sinful state and turns to God. (3) The individual accepts Jesus Christ in faith and receives forgiveness and assurance. (4) Faith is brought to life in transformative discipleship. The theology of conversion broadly follows those of other revivalist groups.

Två neokarismatiska församlingars syn på ledarskap: En komparativ studie av ”Knutby Filadelfia” och ”Livets ord”2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Rainbows over the world’s public health: determinants of health models in the past, present, and future2022In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 50, no 7, p. 1047-1058Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The need to visualise the complexity of the determinants of population health and their interactions inspired the development of the rainbow model. In this commentary we chronicle how variations of this model have emerged, including the initial models of Haglund and Svanström (1982), Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991), and the Östgöta model (2014), and we illustrate how these models have been influential in both public health and beyond. All these models have strong Nordic connections and are thus an important Nordic contribution to public health. Further, these models have underpinned and facilitated other examples of Nordic leadership in public health, including practical efforts to address health inequalities and design new health policy approaches. Apart from documenting the emergence of rainbow models and their wide range of contemporary uses, we examine a range of criticisms levelled at these models – including limitations in methodological development and in scope. We propose the time is ripe for an updated generic determinants of health model, one that elucidates and preserves the core value in older models, while recognising the developments that have occurred over the past decades in our understanding of the determinants of health. We conclude with an example of a generic model that fulfills the general purposes of a determinants of health model while maintaining the necessary scope for further adjustments to be made in the future, as well as adjustments to location or context-specific purposes, in education, research, health promotion and beyond.

    Abstract [sv]

Hymner för redan frälsta: Om lidande och hopp i Den svenska psalmboken2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kärleksbudskapet och realpolitiken: En analys av Svenska kyrkans engagemang i migrationspolitiken2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The church of Sweden has several times engaged in migration politics. In this study the use of the love commandment by national level of the church of Sweden to motivate its engagement in migration politics. The analysis is based on deconstruction of the leaflet “Detta vill vi! Kyrkorna och migrationsfrågorna”. Within the deconstruction three themes are identified that relate to movement, inclusion and power, respectively. Further, the material from the deconstruction is discussed from the ethics of Reinhold Niebuhr and Jacques Derrida. A result of the deconstruction is that the concept church as something transcendent or as an organization has an impact on the communication of the love commandment. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that the self-love of the human being should be brought up in a leaflet as ”Detta vill vi! Kyrkorna och migrationsfrågorna”. Another result is that within the message of the church there is an inherent conflict between Jesus’ message of love and the political laws, and this conflict would need to be illustrated in the text.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A text analytical study has been performed using an abductive approach. The initial study was inductive and followed by a deductive part. Six different documents were studied representing protestant Churches, the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church (Patriarchate of Constantinople)2.The initial inductive part showed that the Church in its handling of the climate crises ought to be able to help people to a better understanding of the climate changes as well as to an understanding of the Churches´ theological view on the relationships between God and man, man to man and God to Creation. The deductive part of the study the documents showed a picture of a panentheistic, good and personal God. God was mainly referred to as a nonsexual entity. This part of the study also showed that all documents agree that the Church has a responsibility to ensure that moral values are respected when it comes to decision-making regarding actions against the climate changes. It is the task of the Church to channel the love of God to people and to the whole Creation. The climate changes have prompted the Churches to partly concentrate on their theology on creation and have caused a reevaluation of their positon in handling the new environmental situation. The major part of the documents gave a view on the theological reflection that the climate changes have forced upon the Churches. All documents regarded the threatening climate changes as a consequence of the human misuse of God’s Creation. Man has not fulfilled God’s expectations of man’s care for his Creation.Human beings are unique in God’s Creation, man is the image of God. In some respects human beings are God’s coworkers or even co-creators. But man has not managed to match God’s expectations, and has not cared for his Creation in the way he wanted. God is in a way mourning the situation that man has caused and what is threatening his Creation. The documents indicated that all Churches have a similar view on the human responsibility to try to restore balance in the Creation. Since their common view is that man, on God’s behalf, has the responsibility to care for and develop Creation, the Churches have the duty to work for a change of human lifestyle in a way that is compatible with a sustainable development. The documents indicated that the Church wants to be a forerunner in the change of lifestyle and also wants to work for a more just world order where those rich in resources should contribute the most to cover the costs for a worldwide handling of the climate crises and for the formation of a sustainable development.

En värdebaserad modell vid krishantering: etiska, teologiska och beslutsanalytiska perspektiv2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The starting point of the work is that an analysis of the value bases of critical social issues is difficult to carry out in any qualified sense from an unstructured basis and that attempts to do so easily result in relatively superficial discussions of particular issues. Instead, we suggest how this might be viewed from a more holistic ethical and systems theological perspective.

In doing so, we review a new framework that aims to distil relevant issues regarding necessary trade-offs and how this can be done. Broadly speaking, this consists of a kind of Socratic dialogue that systematically examines the value base of the decisions that need to be made, as well as whether the effects of the decisions become unacceptable and thus need to be modified vis-a-vis the normative system embraced by the decision-maker. We discuss the role of theologians in this and emphasize that they should take a larger place in discussions on how to deal with complex societal crises, and the main point of this work is therefore to demonstrate the importance of a systematic and transparent method for filtering out critical components from ethical and theological standpoints, and to clarify the effects of the trade-offs between fundamental values that are made in real decision-making situations.

Maskulinitet och eskatologi: Maskulinitet som ett retoriskt grepp för att tala om eskatologi i Första Korinthierbrevet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Jesus: en riktig man2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study is to investigate how the authors of the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Mark use understandings of masculinities when portraying the character of Jesus. The study presents a survey of Greco-Roman hegemonic masculinity, with a focus on the free male’s relation to children, celibacy, bodies, good character and the household. The analysis of the gospel narratives focuses on two themes. The first one is how Jesus’ relation to his household was portrayed in masculine terms. The second theme is how Jesus uses children as an example for adult men. The study shows that it is reasonable to suggest that Jesus is described in the narratives as someone who had a complex relationship to the standards of Greco-Roman hegemonic masculinity. Jesus is sometimes portrayed as an odd man with low masculine status and sometimes portrayed as a man with honor and high masculinity. The question about Jesus’ masculinity depends on the characters’ ability to perceive Jesus’ theological standpoints in the textual world. If they understand Jesus’ theological standpoints they think of Jesus as a man with high masculine status. But if they don’t understand Jesus’ theological standpoints they think of Jesus as a man with low masculine status.

"Vad sätter de sitt hopp till?": En kvalitativ studie om pandemins påverkan på självskattad hälsa hos unga kvinnor2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To get closer to an answer to the questions of how the pandemic affected one's mental health after the pandemic, but also how it affected one's church involvement and one's own faith in God, interviews were conducted with five young women, aged 19–25 years. I used a mixed method, namely three short questionnaires where the informants had to assess their mental, existential, physical, and social health, as well as describe their church involvement, before, during and after the pandemic. These questionnaires were then the basis for the interviews, where they had to nuance their answers even more. In this way, the study's material and empirical data were collected. This was then analyzed based on selected theories dealing with coping, religious coping, meaning-based coping, and spirituality processes. The results of the study show that the pandemic affected the informants in different ways and to different extents. What one brought into the pandemic when it comes to one's mental, existential, physical, and social health tends to influence how one coped with it and what consequences the pandemic created for one's well-being. On the other hand, most of the informants expressed that they take with them new perspectives and lessons learned from the pandemic that they did not have in the same way before. Much of what they mention is that you learned how the body works and that your well-being is better from physical activity, or that now, after the pandemic, you can choose in a different way what you want to be involved in when it comes to the social aspect, but also concrete social interactions and relationships. They prioritize their well-being and well-being in a different way.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objectives of this study is to investigate how the church has changed over time, with focus on how modernity has influenced the church’s construction of its identity through martyrs’ texts, and to contribute to theory development through analysis. The study takes its theoretical starting point in Rowan Williams perspective on history as stories we tell to understand who we are. My main question is: how are changes in the church’s identity reflected in texts of martyrs from two historical periods?

This question is answered through comparative analysis of texts written by martyrs from both the early church and the twentieth century, focusing on how the martyrs interpret and describe their coming martyrdom and suffering. Ignatius of Antiochs letters together with the prison narrative from The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas is compared to texts by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and by four trappist monks from Algeria: the brothers Luc, Paul, Christophe and Christian.

Six motifs are identified as common in the martyrs’ texts regarding their interpretation of martyrdom and its suffering:

    1.    Suffering as freedom and liberation,

    2.    the transformative suffering,

    3.    suffering and martyrdom as argumentation,

    4.    suffering as communion with God,

    5.    the martyr’s suffering as the special path,

    6.    and martyrdom as combat.

Changes within these motifs are identified between the historical periods. Central differences between the texts involve a recurring shift from a transcendental to immanent interpretive framework, a movement from power to powerlessness and an increased focus on humanity and mankind in the modern era. The image of God has changed: from identification with the risen powerful Christ, the martyr rather identifies with the incarnated, suffering, serving, powerless and dying human Jesus in the modern era. The self-image of the martyrs has changed: the modern martyrs see themselves not becoming anything other than human, and instead becoming more human through her suffering and martyrdom. The political potential and hope have also changed: powerlessness is premiered, the martyr’s own guilt as human beings replaces the demonization of the other, and the change the martyrs hope for is in the immanent realm of humanity for the common well of all mankind in modern times.

These changes can only to some extent, but not fully, be explained and understood by Charles Taylors theory on modernity and suffering presented in his A Secular Age (2007) and Byung-Chul Hans theory on modernity and suffering as discussed in his Palliativsamhället (2021). The immanent frame, the process of disenchantment and the anthropocentric shift helps to understand some of the differences between the eras.

But both Taylor’s and Han’s basic thesis is that suffering is impossible to handle and by default meaningless and negative in the modern west, and that suffering in modernity has lost all its political and societal dimensions that previously could result in the fight for political change, and that there is no possibility to maintain a Christian belief in God whilst suffering. This is by this study proven to be incorrect. The modern martyrs, and the church in the modern era reflected through the texts of the martyrs, is influenced by but not synonymous with the modernity pictured by Taylor and Han. They are not non-modern, but neither do they repeat the same interpretations and theology as their precursors in the early church. Instead, we see in them the expression of a renewed Christian identity.

The modern martyrs in this study have, through theological creativity, recontextualized and reinterpreted their faith informed by the experience of modernity as pictured by Taylor and Han. The church has changed over time and it shows through the martyrs accounts and interpretations of their suffering and martyrdom. The renewed identity, both anthropocentric and theocentric, formed through creative theological recontextualization, has made it possible to maintain a Christian belief in God, a hope for a better world and a sense of meaning midst suffering, in the modern era. Taylor’s and Han’s theories about the secularization of the church’s identity and the modern west have not happened in practice.

Makt, Moderskap, Maskulinitet: En narrativ läsarorienterad analys av Perpetuas och Felicitas martyrium2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study is to investigate what the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas (Passio Sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis), read in english translation by Herbert Musurillo, seeks to persuade its reader about, and how. The study takes a theoretical starting point in professor Ross S. Kraemer’s critical perspective on ancient narratives about women as sources not necessarily communicating historical truths and actualities of real women in the ancient world, but are more likely to be narratives consciously constructed by male authors using female characters as rhetorical tools to discuss or explore differing subjects such as gender and identity. Through the method of narrative criticism and reader-response criticism this study answers the following research questions: how are women being described in the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas, and what function(s) do these descriptions of women have in the narrative of The Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas?

The study shows that women are described as either weak feminine mothers or, according to Greco-Roman antique conceptions of gender and sexuality, a masculine male, transformed from a former state of femininity and motherhood. The descriptions are closely tied to the bodies of the women and there is a clear hierarchy where the masculine martyr is ascribed a higher status with a point of view closely related to that of God’s. The descriptions of women have both ideological and theological functions as a way to discuss questions regarding power, motherhood and masculinity. The hierarchy between the characters functions as a rhetorical tool to exemplify what can stand in the way for christians to seek martyrdom, which in the perspective of the narrative is the way someone, through her body and masculine behaviour in the face of torture and sexual humiliation, can communicate the truth about God’s power to the assembled crowds of onlookers. Contrary to previous studies, this study shows that the text communicates ascetic tendencies towards its readers concerning motherhood and are not to be interpreted as a celebration of women or femininity.

The descriptions of women functions as a way to demonise the empire - but not the empire's perspective on gender. This is also a contrast to previous feminist studies of the text. The masculine male transformed from a former phase of femininity and motherhood is the exception that proves the rule about the perception of female weakness and lower status in power. The text appropriates the gender power order and the Greco-Roman ancient construction of gender and sexuality to ascribe the martyrs and God the true power. The rhetoric of female weakness being transformed in to masculine strength, self-restraint and body control through the works of God, functions to convince readers about the narratives ideological perspective and message about the martyrs being the true rulers. The motive is that the antagonist, the empire, the main masculine power in the world, is defeated and proven to be false through submissive feminisation.

Bestående församlingstillväxt: Uppföljande studie för att undersöka om församlingar som vuxit fortsätter växa2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether young people with neuropsychiatric disabilities feel that they have a spiritual longing. The research questions are also about what young people experience that which their spiritual longing is expressed and what conditions and obstacles exist to meet their longing and needs. With the help of role theory, language theory, and the theory of the illusionist world, new knowledge about young people's spiritual longing is gained.

The essay uses a qualitative method and collects empirical data by having two (2) group interviews, the first was with key people who are active in the business. And the second interview was with some young people who are active in the same business. With the help of the key people, broader knowledge has been achieved. By interviewing young people, their spiritual longing has been identified.

The essay shows that young people have a spiritual longing and that it must be allowed to take place and be taken seriously. The young people and the key people show signs that a language and an expression of spiritual longing is something that needs to be explored and developed. The essay concludes that young people have a spiritual longing and there are good conditions for further development, but more knowledge is needed when dealing with young people and their spiritual longing. The Church of Sweden has come a long way on its journey to a community, but there are still unexplored paths to follow.

    Abstract [en]

The origin of the designation χριστιανός is ambiguous. In this article, the use of this term is studied with special emphasis on how it reflects the selfunderstanding of the early Christians in the respective texts. In the late first and early second centuries, the term appears to have been something of a title of honour and an ideal which Christ-believers wished to attain. Toward the end of the second century, χριστιανός was somewhat diluted into referring to Christians as a group in general.

Peter's Legacy in Early Christianity: The Appropriation and Use of Peter's Authority in the First Three Centuries2021Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study combines traditional historical-critical methods with the sociological theories of Max Weber and Pierre Bourdieu in order to discuss how Peter’s authority is portrayed and used to create legitimacy in Christian texts from the first three centuries. The New Testament texts that mention Peter are discussed together with other early Christian writings that in one way or another relate to Peter as an authoritative figure. Peter emerges as a central figure in the diverse early Christian movement and is used to a high degree to discuss theological legitimacy. The main divide is between those who argue that legitimate theology should have a conservative point of departure based on traditional material handed down from the earthly Jesus and an apostolic succession based on interpersonal relations and those who argue in favour of a more progressive point of departure which places more emphasis on contemporary charismatic experiences. Both these perspectives are used by groups of various theological persuasion in order to argue their own position. Peter is sometimes used to legitimise a theological position with reference to Peter’s relationship to the earthly Jesus and sometimes to discredit traditions concerning the earthly Jesus by pointing out that Peter did not understand his true message. Peter is used as both positive and negative example for both these ways of creating legitimacy.

The historical context of the Revelation of John is a much-debated issue. This article discusses the most popular theories concerning the dating and authorship of Revelation and finds them wanting. Rather than being a composition of an otherwise unknown prophet named John in the late first century, it is argued that Revelation should be regarded as one of many pseudonymous apocalypses that are composed in the early second century.

    Abstract [en]

Although the New Testament texts show an awareness of the problems involved with the delay of the parousia, they still defend the legitimacy of the belief in its imminence. A similar pattern can also be found in other early Christian texts. The strategies for coping with and explaining the delay of the parousia change over time, and ultimately the understanding of “imminence” itself is developed. Although belief in the parousia appears to have been fundamental to early Christianity, the significance of this event is transformed from a hope of deliverance to a reason for moral exhortation.

The Epistle of James as a reception of Paul: Rehabilitating an epistle of straw2020In: Scottish journal of theology, ISSN 0036-9306, E-ISSN 1475-3065, Vol. 73, no 3, p. 216-224Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Epistle of James is one of the most overlooked texts in the New Testament. This is partially due to Luther’s judgement of the epistle as anti-Pauline. This article suggests that James should rather be seen as an early reception of Paul that brings new insight into the Pauline legacy of the late first century. James also helps us understand more about the theological issues of its day.

The nature of Pauline glossolalia and its early reception2019In: Scottish journal of theology, ISSN 0036-9306, E-ISSN 1475-3065, Vol. 72, no 2, p. 182-190Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Glossolalia is a phenomenon that has perplexed biblical scholars for generations. This paper challenges the majority view that glossolalia in the New Testament refers to ecstatic utterances and argues that the only independent New Testament testimony of the phenomenon is found in 1 Corinthians.
