The Figure of Socrates in the Early Patristic Culture Wars2021Inngår i: Studia patristica, ISSN 0585-542X, nr 20, s. 165-171Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The figure of Socrates was central to the intellectual culture of Antiquity, and his trial turned to the key reference point in the ancient literature. Church Fathers also referred to him on different occasions. The article argues that different attitudes they expressed to Socrates, his trial and death, his daemonium, and the sources of inspiration for his philosophy, became criteria in the culture wars that often broke out in the patristic era. These wars in some sense were similar to ours, with a more closed attitude to the ‘external’ culture and paideia contesting the more open one. The attitude to Socrates became a litmus test that revealed various ideological preferences in the patristic ‘culture wars’: ‘liberal’, ‘moderate’, and ‘conservative’ ones.

Values and Secularism2023Inngår i: Religious Freedom and Other Human Rights: Threats and Trends / [ed] Weronika Kudła, Tomasz Huzarek, and Maciej Duda, Pelpin, Poland: Bernardium , 2023, s. 277-303Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Secularisation, in the sense of radical differentiation between po-litical and ecclesial, is a key to understand the category of values. Thearticle outlines the modern theories about secularisation, places thecategories of values in the framework of these theories, and illustratesthrough the case study of the Russian Orthodox Church, how the ideaof values can be abused. When “traditional values” are weaponized, culture wars can evolve to real wars, like the one in Ukraine. Russia’scase of such an evolution cohered with the transformation of the So-viet militant secularism to the post-Soviet militant anti-secularism,on which the Russian political and ecclesial leaders have embarkedand which they have instrumentalized. Paradoxically, this is leadingto a self-imposed secularisation of the Russian Orthodox church andits alienation from the original Christian principles.

    War and Autocephaly in Ukraine2020Inngår i: Kyiv-Mohyla Humanities Journal, ISSN 2313-4895, Vol. 7, s. 1-25Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A series of conflicts that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union culminated in the war in Ukraine waged by Russia in 2014. The international community was taken by surprise, and its reactions to the Russian aggression were often confused and inadequate. Even more confused and inadequate were the responses from global Christianity. Russian propaganda often renders the aggression against Ukraine as a quasi-religious conflict: a “holy war” against the “godless” or “heterodox” West. It would be natural, therefore, for the Christian churches worldwide to loudly condemn both propaganda and aggression. However, in most cases, their response was silence. Such reactions came from most local Orthodox churches, the Roman Catholic church, and international ecumenical organizations such as the World Council of Churches. An exception was the reaction from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which decided to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The article argues that the Tomos for autocephaly was, among other reasons, a reaction to the war in Ukraine. The responses of other local Orthodox churches to the Tomos also indicate their attitude to the war in Ukraine. These reactions have demonstrated a profound crisis in inter-Orthodox solidarity and social ethics.

    Abstract [en]

The article examines various theological aspects of the perception of the coronavirus pandemic in global Orthodoxy and the Russian Or- thodox Church. Among other aspects, it touches upon issues pertain- ing to the celebration and distribution of the Eucharist under hygien- ic restrictions. It also explores Christological arguments in support of each practice. The article proposes some specific interpretations of the phenomenology and aetiology of the so-called Covid dissidence. It ar- gues that artificial ideological polarization between so-called “liber- als” and “conservatives” is why many bishops, priests, and laypeople in the Russian Orthodox Church mistrust the quarantine measures.

    Abstract [en]

The article explores various approaches to the Covid-19 pandemic in both global and Ukrainian Orthodoxy. It in particular differentiates be- tween the fideistic and realistic takes on the Eucharist and the transmissibility of viruses through it. The former rejects, and the latter affirms the risk of getting infected with coronavirus through partaking in holy communion. The article also discusses various possibilities and forms of wor- shipping online, including the controversial practice of celebrating liturgy through communication platforms. The article suggests an updated form of the ancient agape--the meal of love that accompanied Eucharist in the early church. It also mentions the ancient and modern forms of the distri- bution of communion, with a special reference to the study by Fr Robert Taft, SJ. Another topic discussed in the article is the so called "Covid dis- sent," when people undermine or dismiss the risks and measures to prevent the spread of the disease. This dissent is popular among the Orthodox fundamentalists and conservatives, including the ones in Ukraine. The two cases of the "Covid-dissent," articulated by former Metropolitans of Kyiv Onufriy Berezovsky and Filaret Denysenko, are in the focus of the study. The article argues that the attitude to Covid-19 that these and some other hierarchs promote, is similar to the medieval "trials by ordeal," when suspects were ordered to fish a ring from boiling water or carry hot iron. They were regarded innocent only when they remained unharmed by these tests. The same attitude, the article argues, leads to stigmatization and victim- ization of those who have suffered from Covid-19.

    Abstract [en]

The article examines the phenomenon of nationalism as such and its Eastern Christian variations. In particular, two main theories of nationalism are described: modern and pre-modern. There are also two stages of the development of nationalism: emancipatory and oppressive. The former is healthier than the latter. The article focuses on the Orthodox versions of nationalism that are consistent with the traditional structure of local churches. In the Orthodox world, national individuality in combination with church locality can be either ethnic or civilizational. The former strengthens a homogeneous national identity in the Balkan style. The latter is Orthodox neo-imperialism, which is incompatible with nation-building. Their incompatibility often leads to conflicts and even wars, as in the case of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
