Korruption i Afrika: En studie om anti-korruptionsarbete och utvecklingsbistånd2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to determine current legal status as to whether it is allowed to share or upload images on social media without asking for permission. The thesis has examined whether an image shared on social media can be a personal data, legally speaking. The legislation about this subject is spread in different laws, which make it difficult to determine what is allowed to do and not. Furthermore, a survey on Facebook investigated the extent to which people share photos on Facebook without asking the people in the photo. The result showed that a lot of people shares pictures without asking permission if they know the person in the photo. If the participants did not know the person, they did not share the photo to the same extent. The participant also answered the question how well they thought they knew about the legislation regarding personal data, surveillance and crime. Half of the participant estimated that they knew about the legislation.

Mänskliga rättigheter i det afghanska familjelivet i Sverige.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the various accessibilities for people with disabilities in the relatively large municipality named Norrköping, Sweden. I’ve chosen to focus on how a group of people comprehend the accessibilities for people with disabilities in this municipality. The framing question that I’ve issued is; How is the physical accessibility for disabled individuals secured in Norrköping and how is the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities complied? To answer this, I’ll use the following two methods; literature studies and interviews/field surveys. In the first, I highlight relevant literature and in the second I investigate what views the municipality, along with 20 randomly selected women and 20 randomly selected men, have on the accessibilities for individuals with disabilities in Norrköping. The results of this study is based on the interviews of 20 men and 20 women in different ages. The interviews were made through surveys that were answered outside of the Campus in Norrköping. These results of the survey answers are presented in bar graphs. I chose to categorize men and women aged 18-30years and +31 to see what different competence levels there are on the physical accessibilities in Norrköping. Based on the survey I could see that, despite the age, the majority thought that there are gaps where the physical accessibilities in Norrköping is of shortage. My study shows that Norrköping has come a long way with the physical accessibilities, but not enough to state that people with disabilities have a full participation in the society.

Var går gränsen?: En politisk filosofisk argumentationsanalys om gränser, människor och mänskliga rättigheter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What are borders? Walls, fences, barbed wires, sovereignty markers, nationalities, symbols, cultures, religions, skin colours, prejudices… Where are borders? In reality, in jurisdiction, in our minds, on maps, in citizenship, inside our bodies, in our gaze… What do borders do? Define, separate, exclude, include, discriminate, hurt, rape, reduce…

The concept of borders is complex and it represents paradoxes such as visible - invisible, reinforcing - weakening, inclusion - exclusion and legal - illegal. In this essay borders are treated from a political philosophical perspective with arguments drawn mainly from the theorists Étienne Balibar, Wendy Brown and Shahram Khosravi. The case is analysed and illustrated by empirical data from mass media reporting. Borders, both visible and invisible, contain a powerful symbolism and affect us as individuals, groups and society. Discussing borders makes weaknesses of the human rights system visible. Borders might affect people's ability to gain access to universal human rights. Where and why do we mark borders and who gets be in or out?

HBTQI-personer och asylprocessen: En queerteoretisk granskning av Migrationsverkets ställningstaganden gällande bedömningen av HBTQI-personers rätt till asyl2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to do a qualitative content analysis, with queer theory as a starting point, of the Swedish Migration Agency’s judicial stance regarding the procedure of assessing reliability and credibility as well as judicial stance regarding the investigation and examination of the forthcoming risk of persons claiming protection due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expressions. To conduct this analysis one research question were formulated: How can one from a theoretical perspective analyze the Swedish Migration Agency's method of assessing whether a person is likely to belong to the LGBTQI group? The study’s theoretical theorems are cumulated from Fanny Ambjörnsson’s book ”What is queer?” and six categories and themes were chosen to use as tools during the content analysis of the selected judicial stances. These six categories and themes are; the value of the language, the desire or the habit of classifying people, normalization, heteronormativity, silence and visibility as well as stereotyping. The study showed that comprise criticism can be directed towards the Swedish Migration Agency's method of assessing whether a person is likely to belong to the LGBTQI group and towards the procedure of assessing a asylum seekers reliability and credibility.

Ett mångdimensionellt maktperspektiv av unga mäns maskulinitet inom en hederskultur2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about masculinity and society with a focus on the consequences of masculinity in a culture of honour. The framing questions in this thesis are the following two; - What consequences does the masculine inheritance inherit in the culture of honour for boys and young men who grow up in socially vulnerable areas? - How are their feelings of confidence in the future affected and what ways they see as open in life and in society? I have chosen to use methods of group interviews with five guys and young men in a segregated area in Stockholm. During these interviews, I assumed Yvonne Hirdman's theories about the gender system. I chose to ask questions to express the boys' perception of how they perceive themselves and indirectly their views on honour, equality and sexuality. The interview results showed that young people experience stigmatisation, they lack a future trust and feel that they are excluded from the majority of society. I realised that it was not enough to explain the culture of honour as only a cultural phenomenon, it also lacked a multi- dimensional power perspective.

Laget Sverige: En etnografisk studie av de människor som nekats sjukersättning av Försäkringskassan2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study aims to analyze claimants encounter with Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) drawing on theories of power. It investigates how this contact has affected the claimants’ view of themselves as contributing citizens. The study has mainly focused on the experiences of assessments for sickness benefit claims as well as the interaction with case officers during the proceedings. The study found that the institutionalized power relations between the citizen and the agency were internalized by the informants. Specifically, it resulted in an altered sense of human worth and societal contribution. Informants described being distanced with regards to agency and society, and internalizing the perception of being a second class citizen. The study showed that the claimants’ experiences of the assessment proceedings led to feeling systematically marginalized by the state. The power influence the informants were subjected to by the agency, resulted in introverted as well as extroverted resistance and ultimately power reclaim. It is in part demonstrated through their participation in the study and their wish to bring the question to light.

Yttrandefrihet kontra säkerhet: En kvalitativ studie av argumentationen kring nazisters närvaro i Almedalen 20172018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the argumentation for the freedom of speech versus the right to safety was presented when these rights came in conflict with each other when a neo-Nazi organization was allowed to co-arrange Almedalen 2017. The material consists of press statements, debate articles and news articles where the arguments of four key agents connected to Almedalsveckan 2017 were collected. In order to fulfill the purpose of the study, the argumentation is analyzed by answering three research questions: How did each agent present their argument? How did the argumentation rely on current law? How did the agents rely on the others’ rights claim? The argumentation is analyzed qualitatively through a normative theory in order to investigate how the claims were made for each right. The agents that claim freedom of speech are Region Gotland and the police. The agents that claim the right to safety are RFSL and Funktionsrätt Sverige together with the JAG Association. The argumentation is categorized thematically for each agent and every category is analyzed separately. The results show that both sides used emotionally charged arguments or affective language and both sides may be considered as lacking in concretization regarding the meaning of their main arguments. Both sides clearly relied on current law by either mentioning laws explicitly or implicitly. All of the agents made some statement about the other key agent’s position or responsibility. Both sides can be considered as having valid right claims by referring to intrinsic values and current law. In the end, Region Gotland and the police have the right to determine who is allowed to co-arrange Almedalen and can therefor decide which claimed rights that is prioritized in the value hierarchy. Furthermore, the study shows that each conflict of rights needs to be valued individually as the circumstances, consequences and claims are crucial for the determination of the hierarchy. For future research, I recommend investigating how the public opinion considers allowing or limiting neo-Nazi’s freedom of opinions, as well as investigating how the Swedish praxis regarding the application and restriction of freedom of opinions for neo-Nazi organizations and parties is carried.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research is to identify possible means to improve governmental measures to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by men towards women. Qualitative interviews with nine non-governmental women shelters are conducted, as well as with a specialist within the field, with the aim of responding to the research’s purpose. Furthermore, The Gender Equality Unit at The Ministry of Social Affairs respond to the findings of the interviews. The main findings of the essay identify a lack of stability and continuity relating to governmental preventive measures. The importance of education and a lack of equality are factors being brought up in particular, in regards to the study’s purpose. The findings also highlight a problematical connection between violent forms of pornography, sexual violence and inequality

Föräldraledighet: En tvärvetenskaplig jämförelse mellan Sverige och USA2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Countries around the world have different systems for parental leave. The United States is the only industrialized country in the world that do not offer any kind of paid parental leave, on a federal level, to its citizens. While some Americans have the right to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, Swedes have the right to 480 days of paid leave. Sweden and the United States are both countries that want to be in the forefront of human rights and according to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), states parties shall “introduce maternity leave with pay or with comparable social benefits without loss of former employment, seniority or social allowances”. The two countries have signed the convention, but only Sweden has ratified it. The political systems and the view of the state, the individual and the family are other distinctions between the countries. Further, the history in which the countries’ welfare has been built has taken different ways. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the differences in parental leave in Sweden and the United States. The jurisprudence, the political systems, the ratification of the CEDAW and the history of welfare will be examined to try to answer the question why these two industrialized countries have a big distinction in the right to paid parental leave.

#METOO: En kritisk diskursanalys av debatten om #metoo-rörelsen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to examine how the #metoo-‐movement is described in ten selected debate articles in the Swedish media written between October 17th and December 27th  in 2017 using a critical discourse analysis. The purpose of the essay is to look at how the debate articles articulates that women choose to break the silence of sexual harassments and abuse through the #metoo-‐movement, and to what extent the debate reflect and challenges the current social practice in relation to gender. The critical discourse analysis aims to clarify the participation of the text in maintaining society’s current social practice, because the discourse both reproduces and changes knowledge, power relations and identities. The current social practice is explained in this essay based on gender theory. The result showed that the debate articles overall reflects the prevailing social practice and the gender hierarchy by in the text questioning women's stories and blaming her for being responsible for the sexual harassments in the #metoo-‐movement. The results also show that there is a linguistic discourse that, to a certain extent, challenges the prevailing power structures in the society. This discourse appears in several articles that describe the movement positively and see its potential to contribute to change. Furthermore, this essay reflects over the #metoo-‐movement in relation to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) which leads to the conclusion that the movement points to the need for more actions from the Swedish government to enable Sweden to fulfill its commitments to the convention.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper considers the legal understanding of due diligence and states’ positive obligations regarding sexual violence. It uses legal dogmatic and legal comparative methods to analyse the European and the Inter-American human rights systems. It also uses a feminist perspective, with a focus on women’s vulnerability. The paper examines the Istanbul Convention and the Convention of Belém do Pará, in addition to case law from the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. In its examination, it illustrates and clarifies the responsibility of states to combat sexual violence and thus violations of women’s human rights. The paper finds that failure by states to act in accordance with due diligence in cases of sexual violence by private actors has been recognized as both torture and infringement of sexual autonomy. This is of great significance in trying to bridge the dichotomy of the public and private spheres, which has characterized human rights. For this reason, the paper concludes that the Convention of Belém do Pará should contain a consensus regulation in the same way that the Istanbul Convention does. This could enable increased accountability regarding due diligence, in order to respond better to the fundamental values of human rights. Moreover, it concludes that the Istanbul Convention should be subject to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights, in the same way that Belém do Pará is in the Inter-American system. This would strengthen the European system’s accountability in relation to due diligence and sexual violence in many ways. Finally, based on a feminist perspective, the paper argues that in order to effectively combat sexual violence through preventive measures, private actors should be held directly responsible. Treaties relating to due diligence responsibilities should therefore be open for ratification by more actors than just states.

Psykisk ohälsa och diskriminering: En kvalitativ studie om bemötande och tillgänglighet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is an analysis of qualitative interviews with people with neuropsychiatric disabilities/mental illness, as well as persons working with mental health or mental disabilities. The interviews were conducted to investigate how their experience of compliance with the services in the various functions of society is, to clarify whether there is discrimination in the social functions of people with mental disabilities. The questions and the analysis of the results are based on Swedish law, and look at the outcome based on Goffman's theory of the deviant's role and identity, with a narrative theoretical point of departure. The result showed that ignorance and lack of involvement/accessibility of actors in different social functions constitute the main obstacle to avoiding discrimination, and inaccessible social services for people with mental health.

    Abstract [en]

Men’s violence against women in intimate partner relationships is a comprehensive problem in society both in Sweden and in the world. Most of the violence occurs at home which makes it a well-hidden problem and the lack of knowledge about men´s violence against women in intimate partner relationships makes it difficult to tackle. The purpose of this essay was to study the character of the violence, how comprehensive the violence is and the actions that Sweden has taken to end men´s violence against women in intimate partner relationships. The result shows that violence in intimate partner relationships occurs in all ages, ethnicities and social classes. The violence can be psychological, physical, sexual, material or economic and the abuser successively takes control over the women and her life. Prejudice about who the abuser is are common and if the abuser doesn’t fit in to the stereotype we seem to look for explanations in the implication of alcohol, anger issues or cultural background. We also seem to mistrust the women and rather than focusing on the crime that has been committed against her we focus on questions such as; why didn’t she leave sooner? To fight this social problem the government has developed a national strategy. This strategy points out that the inequality between women and men is the biggest reason that the violence occurs. According to the strategy education within all levels of society is the key to change the image of femininity and masculinity that feeds inequality between women and men.

Förvaret: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med handläggare på Migrationsverket2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are five detention centers in Sweden (in swedish ”förvaret”), were asylum seekers and migrants are held in custody until the Migration Agency has completed their investigation and concluded who are allowed to remain in Sweden and who should return/sent back to their home countries. The detainees are taken into detention centers because the state and authorities are afraid that they will ”go under ground”. This study has been based on the primary empirical data provided by semi-structured interviews. These have then been analysed with a narrative methodology, and in interaction with relevant literature as secondary data. Seven staff members at the detention center in Flen have been interviewed. Erving Goffman´s theory about ”total institutions” and Michael Foucault´s theory about power and its exercise have been used as theoretical basis for the analysis. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the staff members in the detention center in Flen works, how the staff experience their duties and what opportunities there are available for the detainees. The following questions should be answered: (1) How does the staff work in the detention center and how does the interaction between the detainees and the staff look like? (2) How the detention center affects detainees health and what kind of care is available for detainees? (3) What do the staff consider of the criticisms against the detention centers? In summary, the empirical base shows that (1) the staff at the detention center (in Flen) have two different roles, first to help detainees who feel bad or are sick and also to persuade the detainees to cooperate and leave the country voluntarily. The interviewers stated that some of the detainees do not want any contact with the staff, while others are more open to it. (2) The main aim of the staff is to treat the detainees within the walls of the detention center, however, when the resources are insufficient. When more serious problems arise the detainees are offered care outside the detention center. (3) The interviewed staff members held the opinion that the criticism of the detention centers is wrong and unfair. Their conviction was that the lawmakers have decided that these detention centeras are needed and that they trust their decisions, detention centers are part of the asylum process, that the staff only trying fulfill their duties, detention centers are the result of the policy that people voted for in general elections.

Integration av nyanlända kvinnor: En diskursanalys av arbetspolitiska åtgärder ur ett feministiskt perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The word integration is a well-known word and often used in today's media and politics. The question is if integration is ever spoken in terms of integrations for men and integration for women instead of integration generally. What we can see from several studies is the newly arrived women's exclusion from the integration to the Swedish society, especially on the labor market. This problem is rarely discussed throughout politicians and how they can remove this exclusion from the society, and what kind of efforts that needs to be made on a national level to create a more accepting society. This essay is created to highlight the problems and difficulties that may arise while integrating into the Swedish society and labor market as an immigating woman. This was studied through three different Swedish national documents: “2017 Budgetpropositionen om etableringsinsatser” and two action plans from the Swedish labor authority called “Arbetsförmedlingen”. With the help of the questions, the material was investigated in which efforts are being made in the labor market for newly arrived women seen from a feminist perspective in the documents. The material was read and analyzed based on a discourse analysis using a content analysis. The essay is based on a feminist theory, that is embedded in two feminist perspectives which are: the theory of gender roles and the intersectional perspective. The results of the study show a clear lack of the intersectional perspective, where new arrivals are seen as a homogeneous group. The documents do not express themselves based on the correct terms and the structural problems are not addressed sufficiently, which creates problems for the newly arrived woman to be integrated into the labor market. Therefore, there is a need in national documents to focus more to the needs of the individual, and see it from several grounds and not just see it from a gender perspective. This creates more individualized efforts, but we are not there yet.

Europeiska system i konflikt: Oförenligheter och konsekvenser för de mänskliga rättigheterna2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are some shortcomings in the common, European understanding of human rights. The EU, with its Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Council of Europe with the European Convention, has in some cases clear incompatibilities when it comes to the interpretation of rights. This in turn, will have a negative impact on states that are affiliated to both systems, but also for those individuals who are experiencing that their rights have been violated. This study aims at analyzing where the conflict lies by using a jurisprudence approach, using a comparative analysis method. The study will also look into the possible solution that could be the EU's accession to the European Convention, thus creating a greater consensus on rights issues.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how the new temporary law (SFS 2016:752) guarantees the child’s right to mental health; focusing on the asylum-seeking unaccompanied minor. This subject is examined since the Swedish law that regulates migration got reduced to the minimum standards that can be found in the EU and in international conventions when Sweden received 163 000 asylum seekers during 2015. 35 400 of them were unaccompanied minors. This leads to the question if the new regulations jeopardize the child’s right to mental health. To answer that, this study’s theoretical ground that will be used is legal positivism. By practicing a legal-judicial method and law-based sociological method the study follows three questions; 1. What is Sweden bound to guarantee according to the Convention on the Right’s of the child, associated with the mental health of children and the provisions of the temporary law? 2. Does the temporary law constitute grounds for existential uncertainty, and is it thereby violating the child’s right to mental health? 3. What does the situation look like, related to the mental health of asylum-seeking unaccompanied minors? In relation to the Convention on the Right’s of the Child this temporary law, and the impact of it, is examined. In the discussion it is clear that not only article 24 (the child’s right to health) is fundamental to the question of mental health, but several other articles. The result of this study has shown that the temporary law clearly violates the asylum-seeking unaccompanied child’s right to mental health.

Bostadssituationen för polska migrantarbetare  i Sverige2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about Polish migrant workers’ housing situation in Sweden. The primary purpose is to show how the housing situation looks like for Polish migrant workers who live in Sweden. The second purpose is to highlight how complex the right to housing is and show how this right influence their living standard. The conclusion is based on a content analysis of surveys which were completed by 427 Polish migrant workers. Some information was a result of a content analysis of reports and statistics from different governmental authorities and housing ads from the website poloniainfo.se. The result shows that the majority, 81 percent, either own a flat or have a lease/rental contract of their accommodation. However, what is considered being alarming is that at least 18 percent of respondents are homeless according to The National Board of Health and Welfares (Socialstyrelsen) definition of homelessness. Cramped housing accommodation and ethnic discrimination occurs. There is also an increasing risk for poverty among these people due the deficit on the housing market.

En revolution eller en rasistisk rörelse?: En narrativ analys av två nyhetssajters beskrivning av alt-rightrörelsen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the alt-right movement through two conservative American news sites. The sites that were looked at were Breitbart and National Review. Five articles that discussed the alt-right movement were chosen from each news site. The articles that were chosen had all been written under 2016. This specific year was chosen due to the presidential election that was held that year. It is also because of the increased media coverage that the alt-right movement was receiving due to their connection to then candidate Donald Trump. The purpose of this thesis is to examine if there is a difference in the way the alt-right movement is described by the two new sites. To examine this, three factors were chosen as a foundation for the thesis. The factors dealt with the description of the members of the alt-right, racism and western values. The result showed a significant difference in how the alt-right movement was being portrayed by the articles form Breitbart and National Review. The articles from Breitbart showcased a positive description by sympathizing with their fight against the conservative establishment. The articles from National Review had a complete different outlook on the movement and deemed it as racist and threatening to the foundation of conservatism in the United States.
