Make Love With Thy Neighbour : A Constructive Theological Contribution to the Discourse on Sex in the Swedish Free Churches (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay explores how sex can be understood within Swedish free church theology in light of the Great Commandment, as interpreted through Werner Jeanrond’s A Theology of Love. The study is based on a comparative analysis between two groups of sources: the first group includes historical-critical perspectives from Dirt, Shame, Status by Thomas Kazen, Sex and Religion by Dag Øistein Endsjø, and The Holy Matrimony [Det heliga äktenskapet] by Emma Audas; the second group consists of contemporary free church theological approaches from God and Sex [Gud och sex] by Olof Edsinger, With Your Whole Life [Med hela ditt liv] by Hanna Möllås and Leif Carlsson, and God & Stuff [Gud & sånt], edited by Fredrik Wenell. Through this dialogue, the essay constructs a theology of sex grounded in the call to love God and one’s neighbour. It argues that while sexuality is valuable, it must not become central to human identity or elevated to an idol. Instead, sexual practice should reflect mutual responsibility, dignity, and gratitude toward God. Recognizing the diversity of sexual experiences, the essay underscores the importance of ethical awareness, respect for the other, and resistance to objectification. Sex, in this framework, is a meaningful but not ultimate dimension of Christian discipleship.
