Happiness and the Good Life in the Light of Eudaimonia and the Beatitudes (English)
Abstract [en]
This essay explores how Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia, as interpreted by Alasdair MacIntyre, and the Beatitudes of Jesus, as interpreted by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, can serve as critical counterpoints to contemporary happiness research, with particular focus on the perspectives and accounts of Micael Dahlén.
The study is based on a qualitative text analysis in which three central perspectives, Aristotle through MacIntyre, Jesus through Bonhoeffer, and modern happiness research through Dahlén, are brought into dialogue with one another. Using a comparative method, the thesis examines how these frameworks understand concepts such as happiness, meaning, and morality etc.
The aim is to highlight similarities and differences in their views of happiness and the good life, and based on this comparison, to critically analyse the assumptions and anthropological views that underpin the dominant contemporary discourse on happiness.
