Digital surveillance on social media : A study on Swedish users experiences, rights and consequences (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how Swedish citizens experience corporate digital surveillance on social media, how they believe their rights are affected and what consequences the surveillance has for the individuals. The study is based on an exploratory survey with 42 participants and the material is analyzed using Foucaults panoptic theoretical framework. As the study relies on a limited convenience sample, the conclusions are not generalisable, instead the results provide an indication of how a group of swedish users experience corporate digital surveillance.

The result shows that many participants perceive digital surveillance as an intrusion into their privacy and express negative feelings about the phenomenon. Several feel that they are forced to accept cookies and the consequences of surveillance include among other things, self-censorship, anonymization and for some, a decreased trust in companies. There is also a group that is positively inclined toward digital surveillance because they experience targeted advertising as beneficial and therefore have a high trust in the companies.

The study shows that digital surveillance is a complex phenomenon in which individuals behaviours, rights and experiences vary depending on their knowledge, experience and attitudes towards social media. The results indicate a need for increased transparency, clearer privacy protection and continued research on how different groups in society are affected by corporate digital surveillance.
